Netflix series Squid Game is facing several acquisitions these days for taking its storyline concept from The Hunger Games and plagiarizing the content. Since Squid Game and The Hunger Games follow the same idea, it is easier for the eagle-eyed fans to draw the comparison between Squid Game vs The Hunger Games.

Squid Game is a survival-based drama series that falls into the same category as other notable survival series like The Hunger Games, Battle Royale, and Alice in Borderland. Squid Game is currently on its way to become Netflix’s biggest show ever, whereas dystopian movie The Hunger Games has already established its place amongst the audience. Even though The Hunger Games was released a long time ago, the show still has its fair share of loyal following.

Many of you may not know, but the Korean TV series Squid Games has been in the making for the past ten years. The director and creators of the series Hwang Dong-hyuk began working on the show’s script back in 2008 but couldn’t convince any production company to work on his story. It is safe to say that during this time, Hwang may have done his research work like our expert Amy Santiago and kept a keen eye on the movies and series releasing under the same genre. The Hunger Games also made its way to the big screen during the same time, so there are greater chances that the writer may have taken some inspiration from the dystopian drama.

Without waiting any more, let’s scroll below to find the similarities between the Korean drama Squid Game and the dystopian trilogy series The Hunger Games.

After its release in mid-September, many audiences started comparing the series with the glamorous blonde bombshell Jennifer Lawrence’s movie The Hunger Games. Many even went on to say that the new release is the Korean equivalent of the former film series. Is the plot of the series the only similarity, or is there more to it?

Hwang Dong’s Squid Game follows the story of the main protagonist Seong gi-hun and several others like him, who are drawn out to play a series of children’s games in return for a grand reward. All of the players are in large amounts of debt, so they take home billions of Won without thinking about the consequences. However, when they enter the gaming arena and start playing, they realize that the games come with a far more high-stake than anyone could have imagined, and should the players disobey the rules, they will face their death instantly.

Now, let’s travel back in time and try to get back The Hunger Games story in our heads. As far as I remember, the survival game follows the story of a young Katniss Everdeen who volunteers to be a part of The Hunger Games as a replacement for her little sister. Katniss comes from the small district of Panem, where the annual The Hunger Games takes place every year. Between the age of 12 to 18, 12 boys and girls, infamously known as the ‘Tributes’ from each district of the nation, are dragged into playing. To survive in the games, you have to fight your way through death while killing the other tributes.

The characters in both of the series are placed in an environment where they lose and they die. This tiny but essential detail has caught the attention of many viewers and has led to comparisons with other series and movies franchises, including The Hunger Games. Even though the death of characters in Squid Game is necessary, it always confuses me if there can be more than one winner. Since the death of others increases the prize money, it is natural that the players will have the urge to kill the fellow contestants but will it always end up with the last man standing?

The Hunger Games follows a slightly different concept when it comes to surviving in the series. The surviving game ends when there is only one person left standing at the end. There are only two options left for you. The player either lives or dies. If the player wishes to live, they have to kill others. In the end, the one thing that remains constant in both the stories is the fortune that the winner gets to take with them. The only difference is that Squid Game players willingly enter the game, whereas the latter gets no choice.

Another crazy thing that acts as a similarity between Squid Games and The Hunger Games is the wealthy people. In both the series, wealthy individuals fund the game and find enjoyment in the sufferings of the poor. It is in the hands of the sponsors to maintain the chances of survival in each match. Though, with every level, the stakes only seem to get higher.

Final Words

Squid Game vs The Hunger Games is an interesting comparison to draw because we get to see that there is a lot in common between the two rather than the overall plot. Undoubtedly, the creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk has taken a lot of inspiration from the film series and has molded it in a different shape to give a direction to his series.
