Everyone knows Jaws (1975-1987) as a Hollywood success and the movie that cashed in on sharks being the enemies of humans. In 2017, The Meg was released, and the movie became another commercial hit. Luckily for The Meg, it stands on its own as a unique film and has no similarity to Jaws besides sharks being the central character. So is there another movie, and what is The Meg 2 release date? The Meg was a commercial hit and grossed over $530 million worldwide but did not find favorable reviews from the critics. But that’s not how Hollywood works, and since the movie made a huge chunk of money, its production house Warner Bros gave the green signal for a sequel. 

The Meg 2 release date is scheduled to be on August 4, 2023. Warner Bros announced the movie would first release in the US, followed by a worldwide release. The movie is titled Meg 2: The Trench and will pick up from where the first movie left off. The sequel, however, will be directed by Ben Wheatley and not Jon Turteltaub, who directed the first installment.

Plot Of The Meg | The Story So Far!!

Jason Statham plays the role of disgraced rescue diver Jonas Taylor. Taylor has retired from his diver duties after a rescue mission goes bad. He is blamed for the death of his fellow crewmates, and he resigns from everything he holds dear. 

Five years later, Taylor is brought back to diving to rescue his ex-wife from an underwater mission. His wife and a few other scientists are attacked by a massive shark never seen before. Taylor dives down to the subversive sent for exploration and starts the evacuation of everyone on board. Things go bad again as the megalodon reappears and attacks them again. In the process, one of the scientists onboard sacrifices his life so others can escape.

After the evacuation, the crew plans to kill the shark with poison. While it almost goes to plan, more crew members are killed. Finally, the poison dart hits the shark, and just as we are about to see the shark die, another much bigger shark appears. The new shark devours the smaller megalodon, which perfectly sets up the movie for a sequel.

What Will Meg 2 Be About? The Plot Of Meg 2!

Meg 2: The Trench will pick up where the previous movie ended. The crew and Taylor will most likely plan to kill the bigger shark. So far, there is not much known about the movie as production has just started. The script has not been leaked either, making it impossible to know what will happen in the sequel. 

Steve Alten, the writer of the novel on which the first movie was based, will also be writing the screenplay for The Meg 2. In one of his interviews, Steve said the second movie will be scarier, filled with more blood, and will have dark tones overall. Hearing these things come from the movie writer is exciting!

Meg 2: The Trench Cast | Who Stars In The Meg Sequel?

As Jonas Taylor, the rescue diver, Jason Statham is the central character of the show and will most likely be reprising his role in Meg 2. Statham is most likely also going to be more creatively involved in the movie this time around.

Li Bingbing stars in the first movie as a scientist and a part of the crew and is the romantic interest of Statham’s character. According to various media reports, Bingbing will not be involved in the second movie. 

Besides a new team of writers and directors, most of the team from The Meg will be returning. There is not much information on who else has been cast, and hopefully, Warner Bros will release some hints soon.

The Meg 2: The Trench Trailer | Is There One?

With The Meg 2 just starting its production, there has not been much publicly available. Given the movie’s success, the production is under tight wraps, and so far, we have not received a trailer or teaser even.
