The story of The Mist revolves around David Drayton, played by Thomas Jane. David is a painter who lives in Bridgton, Maine, with his wife, Stephanie, and 8-year-old son, Billy. When a powerful storm damages his house, he visits the supermarket along with his son to get supplies. While shopping at the supermarket, David and everyone else present there notice a man screaming and running towards the supermarket.

Soon they witness a thick fog advancing toward the supermarket, eventually engulfing the whole town. Everyone at the supermarket starts to hear people screaming outside and various types of creepy noises. Not being able to see anything due to the fog, they all stay inside and hope for the authorities to save them. Eventually, they are attacked by strange, alien-like creatures.
