The team is shown to protect American diplomats trapped in Libya, during the Benghazi terrorist attacks in 2012.

13 Hours was nominated for the Oscars at 89th Academy Awards. Along with earning 4 other nominations. Where Was 13 Hours Filmed? Let’s Know This Action Flick Closely!

Director Michael Bay after conferring with other production unit members wanted to shoot 13 Hours on location. However, after not acquiring a security clearance from the government of Libya, the production unit began exploring other potential exotic shooting locations. Then a special team was formed to scout for locations that could portray the backdrop of Libya.

Subsequently, the filming crew decided to majorly shoot 13 Hours in the Mediterranean country of Malta and film some parts in the North African country, Morocco. The arid and rough backdrop of these countries was perfect to depict the scenes of Libya. 

The principal photography began in the summer of 2015 and was completed by the end of June of the same year. So, without waiting any longer, let’s discuss where was 13 Hours filmed, and find out more about the exact shooting locations.

Mosta | Malta

The opening sequence of the film was shot in the city of Mosta, which is located in the northern region of Malta. The filming crew had to struggle immensely with managing the crowd at this location. 

The city being densely populated, made shooting the exterior shots of the market area extremely difficult. However, the production unit later got around the predicament, by deciding to capture the required outdoor sequences of the city, early in the morning.

The filming crew then moved to the town of Attard in Malta. This is where the majority of the filming took place. The production, after arriving, readily began filming the outdoor shots of the city, which was used to portray the base of the militant group, Ansar al-Sharia.

A large set was then constructed by the filming crew, in the Ta’ Qali region. The wide open area was extensively used to film the outdoor shots that portrayed the surroundings of Libya. 

To shoot the interior sequence of the Annex building and the compound that ambassador Smith was shown to live in, was filmed inside the same set. Filming lasted for more or less three weeks in this place, before the crew moved on to the next location.

Paola | Malta

The production unit, after completing the majority of the filming, arrived at the town of Paola, located in the Southeastern region of Malta. The National Hockey Center was used to shoot a sequence where Jack is shown to recreate with his other team members. A few other pivotal sequences were filmed on the outskirts of the town. 

Morocco

The final sequence of the film was shot in the North African country of Morocco. Although only a handful of scenes were filmed in Rabat, the capital of Morocco. It was majorly used to shoot the interior sequences of the film, inside a renowned studio. 

The filming process in Morocco was completed in 2 weeks, after which the unit began working on post-production.

Plot Of 13 Hours | What’s It About

The film opens by taking us to Benghazi, Libya, which is one of the most hostile places on the face of the earth. Later in the film, we are introduced to the character of Jack Silva, who is shown to newly joined the Global Response Staff team in Libya, after a tip-off from the CIA.

Soon after, Jack learns about the growing tensions in the area and designs a plan to safeguard the American ambassador. The plans for the potential terrorist attack, devised by the militant group Ansar al-Sharia gets revealed soon. However, after the American Ambassador, Chris Stevens arrives in Benghazi, he decides to let the DSS agents protect him.

In the final quarter of the film, the Ansar al-Sharia launches an attack on the compound that Stevens was staying in and neutralizes most of the security personnel of the ambassador. The GRS team at the annexe building learns about the compromising situation and reaches the location, after an initial disagreement.

Jack leads the GRS team to wipe the area clean and begins to search for Stevens and his security members. But they soon discover that most of the DSS members have been killed. The GRS team lead, then contacts the intelligence headquarters in America, after fending off a second attack. The credits roll, as Jack and his team get rescued by a special extraction group, who also recover the body of the deceased ambassador, Chris.
