The movie begins with the central character Joe Franklin (played by Brooks Darnell). He’s in a conversation with his affluent friends Gabe (Erick Athavale) and Alan (Jacob Blair). They are planning for a skiing trip to the mountains.
Joe is shown to be reluctant in taking part in this luxury trip, considering his finances. But to his pleasant surprise, Gabe and Alan convince him to agree on going on an all expense paid luxury trip to the mountains, without overthinking about the situation!
As Joe sets on his journey after boarding the private jet, he meets the concierge Courtney Evans (played by Nazneen Contractor). She is shown to be appointed to assist Joe in fulfilling his travel plans and needs throughout the trip.
Interestingly, as Joe and Courtney explore the idyllic locations at Banff, Joe begins to develop romantic feelings for the concierge but hesitates to confront her.
Finally, Joe is shown to muster up the courage to walk up and disclose to Courtney about the actual scenario that enabled him to come for the luxury trip. To Joe’s surprise, the concierge doesn’t find his little secret unappealing at all!
She later admits about her feelings too, and assures Joe that his financial situation doesn’t at all change the way she thinks about him! The film ends on a happy note, as the couple cherish love over avarice! A Winter Getaway was filmed entirely in Canada. The production began filming in November 2020 and completed it in almost one month! Director Steven R Monroe and his crew members decided to shoot the film in and around Alberta and Manitoba, Canada.
Banff National Park, Alberta was chosen as the central location for filming the movie. So without further ado, let’s find out more about these scenic locations!
Banff National Park, Alberta
A Winter Getaway is mostly set around the small town of Banff, a well-known “getaway” destination near Banff National Park. Although, the world famous destination in Alberta, Canada was not surprisingly the first choice of the production for filming!
Swiss Alps, was initially chalked out as the location for filming the movie, as it coincided with the previous title of the film “Love in the Alps”. But soon after the changes were made to the title and the script, the production crew finally decided to shoot at Banff, Alberta, the same location which the film showcases as the getaway spot.
The Banff Springs Hotel shown in the film, was filmed in the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. This swanky property was chosen by the director, to portray on screen the lush and extravagant lifestyle led by the millionaires, on their eccentric trips to luxurious places.
In contrast to the character of the protagonist this location stood as one of the high spots in the film, A Winter Getaway. Other famous films such as Days of Heaven, The Edge and Mystery Alaska were also filmed at this idyllic location.
Winnipeg And Southport, Manitoba
The Banff Lookout Hotel showcased in the film, was filmed at The Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The famed hotel located at downtown Winnipeg, featured as the resting spot for Joe, where he booked his master suite room to dote on the irresistible view of the mountains.
The Grain Exchange Building located at 167 Lombard Avenue, Winnipeg was also seen in one of the sequences. It was where Joe goes out with his concierge, Courtney, to take a tour of the local sights. Films such as Sweet Autumn and Snowkissed were also filmed at this beautiful location.
The production team had to face major challenges while shooting at this location due to the government restriction because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Later, they succeeded in acquiring the permission to complete filming for the movie, by assuring the authorities about the safety plans!
A handful of outdoor sequences were filmed in Southport, Manitoba. Such as the scene where Joe sets foot on a private jet and meets Courtney for the first time, was filmed at the Southport Aerospace Centre.
