The makers of Barbarians, initially wanted to shoot the entire series in and around the capital of Greece in Athens. But as the production unit started to scout for ideal filming locations in Athens, they couldn’t find any place that could portray the backdrop that the show demanded. 

Thus, the unit revised the list of former shooting sites, and came to the final conclusion to shoot Barbarian, completely in Hungary specifically in the city of Esztergom and Budapest for season 1 and began filming in August 2019. However, for season 2 the production unit decided to change the shooting location to Poland and commenced the filming process by the end of September 2021 and completed it within 2 months.

Esztergom | Hungary

The sequence of the pilot episode where we see the character of Segimer, the chieftain of the Cherusci tribe giving instructions to his men, was actually filmed in the city of Esztergom. This city located in the northern part of Hungary was the perfect location to match the backdrop, that the makers wanted to portray.

The Majority of the exterior sequences in the show, which depict the Teutoburg Forest in Germany, were in reality filmed around the outskirts of Esztergom, specifically near the Komarom-Esztergom County. The production unit had to arrange horses and trained swordsmen to capture the exhilarating sequence of the Battle of Teutoburg Forest. After which the production unit moved to the next location.

Budapest | Hungary

After the completion of the majority of the filming, the production unit arrived at the capital city of Hungary. The filming crew did not capture any outdoor shots in Budapest, but instead used a studio, to film the interior sequences. The production unit constructed a make-believe camp inside the studio, to portray the tents of the Cherusci tribe shown in the series. Almost all the interior sequences till episode 6 were filmed on set.

Krakow | Poland

To shoot the sequences of the second season of Barbarians, the production unit moved to the historic city of Krakow in Poland. This was done mainly to capture the exterior shots of the medieval structures in the city. Some pivotal sequences were also filmed in areas adjacent to the banks of the Vistula River. 

The production unit then used a renowned studio, located in the downtown area of the city, to capture the interior sequences inside a set. Filming lasted for more or less two months in this location, before the makers returned back to Germany.

Plot Of Barbarians | What’s It About

At the very beginning of the series, we are acquainted with the proud Cherusci tribe, and its leader Segimer, a middle-aged strong warrior who is shown to grow tired of the oppressive Roman Empire and their Imperial guard, Varus.

Later in the show, Arminius, Segimer’s son returns to his tribe, to help his father plot an ingenious plan against the Roman soldier, Varus. The character of Folkwin and Thusnelda emerge, after finding out the news of Arminius’ return and form an alliance with him. However, Varus, unbeknownst of the entire plot, commands Arminius, who was still disguised as a Roman soldier, to catch and kill Folkwin and Thusnelda. Although, he intelligently leads Varus and his men to the Teutoburg Forest. 

Meanwhile, Folkwin and Thusnelda, unite the rest of the Germanic tribes and implore them to join the rebellion against the Roman Empire. Soon the united tribes ambush the Roman Imperial army and bravely fight in the battle of Teutoburg, to save their motherland.
