Where Was Blockbuster Filmed? Let’s Know This Comedy Series Closely!!

As Vanessa Ramos had to work with a nominal filming budget, after conferring with other creative heads of the production, Ramos decided to shoot Blockbuster entirely in Canada. Specifically in and around the city of  Vancouver, British Columbia. 

Despite the show being set in the small town of Bend in Oregon, the production unit decided to film in Canada to take advantage of the lucrative filming tax credit (35%) available in the province of British Columbia. This would give the production unit some breathing space, to use the saved finances in other areas of the project.

The principal photography began towards the end of February this year and was completed within 2 months. The filming schedule got delayed by a couple of weeks, due to the mismanagement of the crew. Manitoba Street Studios, Vancouver | British Columbia

As most of the events showcased in the series take place inside the video store, the production unit had to arrange a perfect studio, to construct a matching set. Soon, the Manitoba Street Studios located in the southern part of Vancouver was scouted and the production unit decided to film all the major interior sequences of the Blockbuster video store there. 

However, due to a disagreement between the production unit and the owners of the studio, the filming of the entire project was delayed for one and a half weeks. Nonetheless, the filming commenced after the unit and the owners agreed on amicable terms. A make-believe set was constructed at the backlot of the studio which portrayed the video shop. The filming crew had to arrange special lighting equipment to capture the exterior sequence of the store at night.

Other filming locations, Vancouver | British Columbia

After the production unit completed filming the majority of the interior sequences of all ten episodes, the crew started capturing the outdoor shots. Some pivotal exterior shots of the high-rise buildings located on Waterloo St. portrayed the corporate office of Blockbuster. 

A vacant shop located in the Broadway area of Kitsilano was turned around by the unit, to film Timmy and co-workers’ coffee date sequence. Some other establishing sequences were filmed in the downtown area of Vancouver before the production unit began working on post-production.

Plot Of Blockbuster | What’s It About

Blockbuster is the newest edition to the bunch of hilarious slapstick comedy series, available for streaming on Netflix. The pilot season of Blockbuster has a total of 10 episodes, averaging 28-30 minutes each.

At the very beginning of the series, we are introduced to the character of Timmy Yoon, a hardworking manager of the Blockbuster Video Store, briefing the other characters, the employees of the store, on how to increase sales. Timmy later learns that the directors of the franchise have already shut down the other video stores and are planning to close this store as well.

The horrific news takes Timmy by surprise, as he struggles to convince the directors to review their decision. And later is forced to explain the failing situation to his co-workers. Various subplots are introduced giving us a backstory of the supporting characters. Midway through the season, the team comes up with innovative ideas to gain more customers, and arranges a “Block-party”. 

However, the team fails to educate the customers about the viability of accessing a brick-and-mortar video story and engaging in real conversation with the workers, over watching content on the internet. Eventually, in the last episode, the solar storm news which would shut down the internet all over the country gives Timmy and his employees hope to save the store. 

Soon after, the team decorates the entire shop and even invites popular actors for promotion. However, after the huge influx of customers, get into a brawl and loot the store. Season 1 ends with Timmy losing his last chance to revive the store, but develops a romantic relationship with one of his employees.  Watch the show, to know more!
