Are you fond of watching neo-noir films? Then read this article to know everything about a similar film, Brick starring Gordon-Levitt. Furthermore, I’ll also let you in on where was Brick filmed.

Brick is a classic American neo-noir flick that was released in the summer of 2005. This amazing film was written and directed by Rian Johnson. In fact, Rian made his directorial debut with this mystery flick.

The basic premise of Brick is centered around the character of Brendan, a senior-year student at San Clemente High School in California. The story takes a sharp turn when Brendan’s girlfriend suddenly goes missing, and the lead actor starts investigating all by himself.

Rian was able to make Brick within a nominal shooting budget. However, the makers weren’t satisfied with the commercial performance of this thriller flick at the box office. Brick only managed to gross over $3.9 million in worldwide collection.

The critics thoroughly enjoyed Rian’s mystery noir flick and gave positive reviews. Brick won 11 major awards and collected 23 prestigious nominations in total. But before I tell you more about this award-winning mystery film, let’s take a closer look at where was Brick filmed.

Where Was Brick Filmed? Let’s Know This Mystery-Noir Flick Closely!

Since Rian was making his directorial debut with this neo-noir film, he wanted to present an unconventional story to the audience. To put it softly, not a lot of people enjoyed the overall storyline of Brick, which eventually reflected on the overall collection figures at the box office,

But, at the same time, the critics widely appreciated Rian’s unique approach and his guts to narrate an original story in a unique and unorthodox way. So, it suffices to say that even though Rian’s first feature film didn’t clique with the audience, it piqued the interest of the critics for sure.

Rian Johnson didn’t constrict himself to just writing an unorthodox story for Brick, in fact, the director used the same technique while selecting the filming location for this project.

Instead of taking an easy route and shooting the majority of the outdoor scenes in Los Angeles, just because the story of Brick is set in California, Rian decided to use a unique filming location.

The director of Brick decided to shoot the majority of the outdoor scenes of his film in and around the coastal city of San Clemente. Even though this city has breathtaking and gorgeous shooting locations, not a lot of filmmakers shoot in and around this beautiful city.

But, Rian was confident enough to choose this unconventional yet beautiful filming location and shoot the majority of the outdoor scenes for this project. The remaining scenes of Brick were filmed in Orange County.

As per reports, Johnson and his team took less than 21 days to shoot the entire film. The principal photography of Brick began in the summer of 2004 and was completed in less than a month.

However, it’s impossible to make that out, considering the top-notch shots which the crew captured during the filming process. The fact that the director and crew were able to complete the shooting process within a short period of time was the preparation that Rian took before the filming began.

According to reliable sources, the director visited each filming location in person before asking the crew to commence shooting. On the other hand, Rian took almost three months to train the actors and make them rehearse the roles over and over again.

Let us now discuss in detail where was Brick filmed. Later, I’ll also walk you through the plot of this mystery thriller film.

San Clemente, California | USA

The coastal city of San Clemente is an integral part of Orange County, California. Apart from San Onofre state beaches and sandstone bluffs, this beautiful city is also known for its lively atmosphere.

Each year the locals of San Clemente arrange musical events and food festivals near the shorelines in tents and other movable structures. These happening events attract a lot of people from all parts of America to join the festivities and spend some good time with their family and friends.

Coming back to the main topic, the shooting process of Brick commenced in this coastal city. The sequences depicting the school in the film were shot inside San Clemente High School. The production members had to take special permission before making minor changes to the overall structure of the school.

Other important outdoor scenes of the movie were filmed at T-Street Beach and Casa Romantica Cultural Centre. The director decided to shoot most of these outdoor shots on 35mm film stock.

After these scenes were shot, the production members moved to another city in California and filmed the remaining interior scenes of the movie.
