The story of Broken Arrow is set in the state of Utah. However, the actual filming of this flick took place in several locations in America. We would definitely discuss the filming locations one by one, but before that, let’s first understand how John Woo decided to start this project.
The making of Broken Arrow was announced in the closing months of 1994. John and Graham wanted to make a movie like Top Gun for the audience. So, at the beginning of this project, Graham started working on the script while John assembled other production team members.
After the script was adjusted, John Woo supervised the auditioning process and simultaneously asked the production members to scout shooting locations in America. Later, the filming crew was able to find a number of suitable shooting sites in Utah and California.
But since John needed a rough and arid backdrop for a couple of scenes, he asked the production members to search for ideal filming locations in Arizona as well. After reviewing all the scouted locations, the director finally asked his crew to start filming.
The principal photography of Broken Arrow commenced in the final week of April 1995 and continued until the end of August. The filming process lasted for 4 months or so. During this time, the movie’s outdoor scenes were captured in and around the states of Utah, Montana, and Arizona.
But, it’s important to mention that some pivotal interior sequences of the movie were also filmed in California, apart from the outdoor shots. John made sure to use one of the best film studios in Los Angeles to shoot the interior scenes for his film.

Trained pilots were used as body doubles of John and his partner to film this exhilarating flying sequence. These shots were captured near Lake Powell, Utah. Other important scenes in the same state were filmed near Glen Canyon National Recreational Area.
Other Filming Locations | USA
After the movie’s first quarter sequences were captured, the production members moved to the next filming location. The iconic scene of the American Railways was filmed in Livingston, Montana.
Additional outdoor scenes were filmed in Denton and Lewiston, Montana, after which the filming crew moved to Arizona. The high-flying sequences from the movie’s final quarter were filmed near Marble Canyon, Arizona.
The remaining interior shots of the movie were captured inside 20th Century Fox Studios, located at 10201 Pico Blvd, Century City, Los Angeles. By the final week of August 1995, the entire filming process of Broken Arrow ended.

The basic premise of Broken Arrow revolves around American fighter pilot Vic Deakins and his partner Riley Hale. At the beginning of the movie, Vic and Riley appear to be flying a stealth bomber jet with two B83 nuclear bombs.
