Where Was Empire Records Filmed? Let’s Know This Musical Drama Film Closely!
The story of Empire Records is set in and around the Mid-Atlantic state of Delaware. But apart from a few scenes the majority of the filming took place in North Carolina, specifically in Wilmington.
It’s also important to mention that some sequences of the movie were also captured in and around the state of New Jersey. The director of Empire Records thought of shooting the entire movie in Delaware.
But the fact that he couldn’t find any ideal filming locations in Delaware, he decided to look elsewhere. So, during the initial stages of production, the director and his crew looked for a number of potential filming locations in and around the East Coast.
After they were satisfied with the overall backdrop of Atlantic City, they decided to shoot some outdoor sequences around this beautiful city. On the other hand, a separate team scouted a couple of brilliant filming locations in and around the city of Wilmington, North Carolina.
Since the director also liked the backdrop of Wilmington, he decided to shoot the remaining outdoor shots around this city. Also, the fact that the filming locations in Wilmington were not at all expensive helped the director to choose this city as the main filming location for his movie.
The principal photography of Empire Records commenced in the second week of October 1994 and was over before Christmas Eve. During this time, the production members were able to shoot the outdoor scenes without many problems.
Eventually, the filming crew was also able to finish the shooting process of Empire Records within the estimated timeline. Special pieces of equipment were used for shooting the interior scenes inside the music store, which were brought from California.
Let us now discuss in detail where was Empire Records filmed. Later, I’ll walk you through the plot of this musical movie as well.

The opening sequence of the movie was filmed in the city of Wilmington. The production members used a vacant shop located on the outskirts of Wilmington and filmed the interior scenes of the music store.
But, before the sequences of the music store were shot, the production members had to turn around the entire shop. In fact, the production designers spent the majority of their time making this vacant shop look like a cook music store.
A couple of other outdoor shots were filmed in and around Wilmington, after which the production members moved to New Jersey.
New Jersey | USA
The second phase of shooting was done in Atlantic City. The production members used an actual music recording studio to capture the sequences of the recording. But while filming the scenes on that very property, the production members ran into a minor problem.
However, after the director of Empire Records intervened, the issue was quickly resolved. The shooting process of this musical film continued till the third week of December 1994. After that, the production members wrapped the entire shooting process.
