Apart from writing the best-selling novel, Diversion James Dearden also wrote the screenplay for this project. In fact, the basic premise of Fatal Attraction is actually inspired by James’ novel, which was published a couple of years prior to the film,
Adrian Lyne, the director of Fatal Attraction, managed to convince Dearden to join this project after he read the novel. However, Adrian also asked the screenplay writer to change a couple of elements in the script, such as the story world, character backstory, etc to make the overall premise more captivating for the cinema audience.
Since the story of Fatal Attraction is set in and around the city of New York, Adrian and his started looking for filming locations around the same city. However, before Adrian began looking for shooting locations, he conferred with other contemporary filmmakers who had previously filmed in New York.
After taking all the insights from other talented directors, Adrian and his team finally began looking for suitable locations in and around the Manhattan area. As soon as the locations were finalized, the production members started to prepare for shooting.
The principal photography of Fatal Attraction commenced in the final week of September 1986 and continued till the second week of December. It’s important to mention that all sequences of this movie were actually filmed in and around the state of New York.
The entire shooting process of Fatal Attraction lasted for 3 months or so. After the filming process was completed, the production members began working on the promotion of the movie.

Other pivotal sequences of the movie were captured near Mt. Kisco. The interior sequences of Dan’s country house were filmed outside of a large mansion located at 227 Guard Hill Road.
The remaining outdoor shots of the movie were captured in and around the city of New York. The sequence where Dan and Alex meet for the first time was filmed inside a famous Chinese restaurant.
The production members took special shooting permission from the owners of “Mr. Chow of New York Restaurant” located at 324 East 57th St, Midtown, Manhattan, to film the dating scene.
Additional outdoor scenes of the film were captured around the Midtown Manhattan area and Playland Parkway. After all the outdoor shots were filmed, the production members used a well-equipped studio located near the downtown area of New York and filmed the remaining interior scenes.
The shooting process of Fatal Attraction was completed by the second week of December 1986, after which the production members began working on the promotion of the movie.
