The principal photography began in the Texan city of Pflugerville in 2005. The production members took 2 and a half months to shoot the first season, although the shooting of every other season that followed in the later years, was completed within 6 weeks. So, to shoot the pilot episode of the first season, the crew traveled to the downtown area of Pflugerville. A sports and recreational center located just outside the business district was used to shoot the first football match depicted in the show. However, to capture sequences of the other league games, the production members took special filming permission from the authorities of a local football ground and later used it for shooting the outdoor scenes. 

The interior scenes depicting the high school of the Dillon Panthers were all filmed inside a public school in Pflugerville, in a designated area. Other pivotal sequences were filmed in different parts of the city until the third season, after which the filming crew moved to another city in Texas.

The majority of the filming for season 4 of Friday Night Lights took place in the beautiful city of Georgetown in Texas. The creators of the show changed the filming locations to depict the professional championship that the Dillon Panthers were participating in. A local well-maintained stadium was used to shoot the scenes of the tournament. Although in order to capture the exterior shots of the house that coach Eric Taylor lived in, the filming crew moved to the city of Austin. A small-sized home located on the outskirts of Austin was used.

The interior sequences of the shows from season 4 onwards, were filmed inside a set in Austin Studios. This famous studio located at 1901 East 51 Street has been used by many filmmakers over the years, to recreate pivotal sequences. However, the last episode of Friday Night Lights was filmed in the summer of 2011, after which the show ended.
