The story of House on Haunted Hill is set in Florida and California. In order to keep things uncomplicated, the director decided to shoot the outdoor scenes of the film in the same locations.
However, only a handful of scenes were captured in Florida. Whereas the majority of the outdoor scenes of House on Haunted Hill were filmed in California, specifically in and around Los Angeles County.
But, before any of this was decided, William Malone spoke to the director of the original film and took some ideas. Later, Malone and Beebe worked together to make the screenplay more interesting.
After all this was done, the director asked the production members to look for ideal filming locations in California, Meanwhile, the shooting locations in Florida were simultaneously scouted by Malone in person.
The principal photography of House on Haunted Hill commenced in the final week of September 1998 and continued until the third week of January 1999. The shooting process was delayed for almost a month.
One of the actors, while shooting a stunt scene, got injured and was taken to the hospital immediately. Since the actor was playing a pivotal role in the movie, all filming dates had to be rescheduled until she was able to make a full recovery.

The iconic “fire breakout scene” in the movie was shot in a different location as the hospital authorities didn’t give permission to shoot this extremely dangerous scene inside the premises of the actual hospital.
The outdoor scenes featuring the amusement park were shot inside Islands of Adventure, Universal Orlando Resort, located at 1000 Universal Studios Plaza, Florida. After these sequences were shot, the production members moved to California and captured the remaining scenes.

The second phase of the shooting began in California. The sequences where we see the contestants going inside the haunted house were filmed in Los Angeles. The production members filmed the exterior shots of the ghastly house outside of Griffith Observatory, located at 2800 East Observatory Rd, California.
Additional scenes were filmed near Griffith Park and Crystal Springs Drive, after which the filming crew moved to the next shooting location. The remaining scenes of the movie were shot in Santa Clarita Studios, located at 25135 Anza Drive, Santa Clarita.
The entire shooting process of House on Haunted Hill was completed by the third week of January 1999.
