In the last couple of decades, Hollywood has produced numerous fantasy movies. Some are big-budget, and some are low, but the list is long. Having said that, back in the late 80s, fantasy movies weren’t that common, which is why Little Monsters is a particular movie. Well, I wouldn’t mind calling it a classic. Back in the day, it was considered a children’s movie. But in today’s world, it’s a film that anyone can watch and enjoy.

The movie is set in Boston, but the entire film was shot in North Carolina, specifically in Wilmington, Castle Hayne, and Wrightsville Beach. The Stevenson Home was a set built on Stage 4 of the Screen Gems Studio at 1223 North 23rd Street. The studio’s production team built the dining room, the kitchen, and Brian’s bedroom attic. The scene in which the monsters scare a baby was also shot on this stage.

The exterior shots of the Steven Home were taken at 1519 Chestnut Street. Todd’s home scenes were filmed at a property at 1703 Princess Street. The scene where Brian and his younger brother, Eric, walk by a cemetery was filmed outside the Wilmington National Cemetery at 2011 Market Street.

Brian’s school scenes in the movie were filmed at two different schools: Forest Hills Global Elementary School, which is situated at 602 Colonial Drive, and Winter Park Elementary School, at 204 MacMillan Avenue. The scene in which Brian and Maurice cause mischief was shot at a house at 109 North 15th Avenue, Wilmington.

The monster’s underworld was entirely created from scratch by the production team at an abandoned factory called the Roanoke Cement Factory at 6411 Ideal Cement Road. The factory served as an ideal place for filming the entire sequence of the underworld.

Some of the scenes at the movie’s end were filmed at Shell Island Resort Hotel, which is situated at 2700 North Lumina Avenue, Wrightsville Beach. The small North Carolina town has been featured in several other movies and TV shows.

The story of Little Monsters revolves around the character of Brian Stevenson, played by Fred Savage. Brian is an 11-year-old boy who moved to a small town in Boston with his parents and younger brother. He roams around the neighborhood alone and feels isolated.

Brian’s brother, Eric, wakes everyone up one night with a loud scream. Eric claims that he saw monsters that came from under his bed. His dad tells him that monsters aren’t real and asks him to go back to sleep.

Brian is a smart and brave boy; he is not afraid of ghosts or monsters. After a few days, Brian realized that Eric was right.
