Lone Survivor, an action-based war-biopic released in 2013, took the theaters by storm. The duration of the film is around 2 hours, but it’s going to fly by once you start with this film. Director Peter Berg successfully brought the real survival story of a US Navy SEAL (Marcus Luttrell) against all odds.

We will go on to discuss where was Lone Survivor filmed, but first let’s discuss briefly about the plot of the film.

The Plot Of Lone Survivor | What’s It About

Let’s start from the first scene, shall we? Ok, so in this war film, the real survival story of Marcus Luttrell; US Navy SEAL played by Mark Wahlberg is showcased. After being deployed on a mission to Afghanistan to neutralize the Taliban leader: Shah.

The situation turns south on him and he ends up in the enemy territory without any backup, with gruesome death lurking in the corner! Despite resistance and bare minimum chances of making it alive from that sort of chaos, Marcus Luttrell lives. He survives to tell his inspiring story to the world in his book Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10 published in 2007.

The film adaptation is based on this book. Other Navy SEALs who were there in the mission in real life and in the movie as well are played by some of the finest actors of Hollywood such as, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, and Emile Hirsch. Out of the 4 member team, only one soldier survives and makes it out of the jagged terrain.

Afghanistan

Where Was Lone Survivor Filmed? Modern Warfare Comes To Life!

The war waged against Afghanistan by the United States lasted for more than 20 years! (2001-2021). Afghanistan being located between Central and South Asia, proved to be challenging and exigent, making it way more difficult than it was for the US Troops to complete their mission.

The primary targets were hiding deep in the Hindu Kush mountain range more specifically around the region of Kunar Province. These obscured hideouts like the Korangal Valley (The Valley of Death) were shown in the film, because of the intel provided by Navy SEAL veterans acting as the technical advisor for the film.

Amazingly enough the main bulk of the shooting was completed in 42 days, by director Peter Berg and his production team. But there is a twist to this tale! The locations shown in the movie were outright impossible for the production to set camps and shoot for the film.

New Mexico

Director – Peter Berg and his team resorted to shoot the film back home in the USA, and to be able to match the sort of environment they were looking for they ended up choosing one of the Mountain states of the southern Rocky Mountains; New Mexico.

Among the 50 states in the US, New Mexico is the fifth largest, but is not densely populated at all. The diversified climate and topography of the area from lush green mountains to arid deserts, makes it burdensome for the civilians to live there. Somehow the similarities between the location shown in the film and the real location of filming, match with each other. But the production team took assistance from technology (Digital Cinematography) as well, to minimize the contrast and subtle variations.

Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Santa Fe National Forest served the purpose of recreating the terrain of Hindu Kush Mountain range. With big production house like Universal Pictures by his side, the director was able to complete the filming in a very short span of time, and delivering a noteworthy film that brilliantly showcases the tactics of modern warfare against terrorism.
