Do films depicting the harsh realities of troublesome history inspire you? Then continue to follow this article till the end, where I discuss an awesome film, Mudbound, showcasing the inspiring story of an African-American family living amongst white supremacists. And later, let you in on where was Mudbound filmed.

The American historical-drama flick, Mudbound, released in 2017, was adapted from a novel by Hillary Jordan, published with the same name 9 years prior to the film. Director Dee Rees in his rendition of the film, presents the gripping story of a black African-American family, fighting against racism while living in one of the southern states in America, known for white supremacy.

Despite this intense-drama flick being hugely popular amongst audiences and critics, it failed to achieve considerable success at the box office. Mudbound only managed to gross over $11 million in total box office collections against the production budget of $10 million. However, this war-drama film performed astoundingly well at the Academy Awards, earning over 4 nominations for the brilliant screenplay and the titular performance of the actors.

So before I discuss the plot of this awe-inspiring cinema, let’s find out where was Mudbound filmed. So that you can take a closer look at the filming locations

Where Was Mudbound Filmed? Let’s Know This Historical Flick Closely!

The makers of Mudbound were pretty certain on keeping the filming locations authentic, with respect to the African-American history in America. Thus they formed a special team of 4 members and asked them to only scout for locations which is intertwined with the stories of racism and slavery, that prevailed in America post World War II.

After a few days of scouting around different places in America, the production unit came to the final conclusion to film the majority of the sequences in and around the southern state of Louisiana. However, to capture the sequences of the War in Germany, the unit arrived at the final decision to recreate those scenes in Hungary, specifically in Budapest. The principal photography commenced in the summer of 2016 and was completed in about two months or so. The major problem which delayed the filming schedule, occurred during shooting a high-flying action sequence in Budapest.

One of the main actors was badly injured while performing a stunt scene. Paramedics rushed to the spot to aid the actor, and he was taken to the hospital immediately. Shooting came to a complete halt for a week and a half, but later resumed after the actor recovered from the leg injuries. So without waiting any longer, let’s have a detailed discussion about where was Mudbound filmed, and find out more about the specific shooting sites.

Louisiana | USA

The opening scene of the film, where we are acquainted with the central character’s mother, Florence Jackson, working in the field of St. Joseph Plantations, was filmed in St. James Parish.

This parish is located on the outskirts of the bustling city of Lutcher, and is an integral part of the New Orleans-Melarie metropolitan statistical area. The lush background with open and wide cotton plantation fields, attracted the makers to film in this location. Apart from the picturesque and soothing settings of the place, St. James Parish also served as a historical place, where majority of the African-slaves lived and worked.

Thus, a small-house located near this region, was used to shoot the outdoor scenes of the Jackshon’s family home. The production members had to remodel the front entrance and the porch of the house to make it look older and more shabby.

Few other sequences were filmed outside of Lutcher, to showcase the return of the Jackson boys from World War II. Special vintage cars were transported from Los Angeles by the production to capture the car-chase sequences.

Budapest | Hungary

After the majority of the sequences were captured in the southern state of Louisiana, the production traveled overseas to Hungary. Scenes depicting the battlefield of Germany during World War II were primarily filmed in an open field located in Budapest. The terrain and overall background of Hungary matched with the setting of Germany, that is why the sequences of the War were filmed here. Plus it was way cheaper for the unit to find local actors and other logistics in Budapest, than any other major German city.

So after the exterior scenes of the battlefield were captured, the production unit returned to America and shot the remaining scenes inside a well-equipped studio.

Now, if you’re almost certain to make a trip to this beautiful European country, then you surely look into Lake Balaton, Eger, Debrecen, Szeged, Szentendre, Esztergom and Heviz which are quite popular among tourists visiting Hungary from distinct parts of the world.

The central story of Mudbound entails the journey of the African-American Jackson family, working in one of the plantation farms in Mississippi for generations as a slave. At the beginning of the film, we are introduced to the character of Florence Jackson plucking cotton at one of the fields owned by the McAllan family.

As the story progresses further, different aspects of racism are vividly portrayed through the characters of Henry and Jamie McAllan. The female lead is first shown to accept the torture without showing an ounce of defiance. But as soon as she gets the news of her son returning from the battlefield, a feeling of upheaval provokes Florence to stand up against the atrocities.
