The famous American author, Rob Greenberg had previously experimented with comedy films like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Meet Dave, before joining this project. Although, during the initial stages of pre-production the director had to face a major setback.

Rob, had a disagreement, with one of the creative heads, with regard to the script, as he wanted to change the entire story. But the production head was completely against the decision and decided to include recurring elements and characters from the original film. 

After this issue was resolved, the production members were instructed to scout potential filming locations in and around Canada. As the makers wanted to take advantage of the hefty filming tax credit offered by the province of British Columbia, the makers decided to shoot the entire film there. 

Principal photography for Overboard began in September 2017 and was completed within 8 weeks or so. The filming schedule was short as compared to the other films that Bob directed, as the shooting locations were fewer. The schedule remained unchanged for the most part, as the members pre-arranged the filming permissions and logistics.

Richmond, British Columbia | Canada

British Columbia, is considered by most filmmakers, working with a minimal production budget, as the perfect filming location. The primary reason is because of the luring filming tax credit of 35% offered by the province. But apart from that, the setting of British Columbia is absolutely beautiful, which could be utilized to portray a picturesque backdrop for most light-hearted films.

So, aligning with the same thoughts, Rob also arrived at the final conclusion to film Overboard, in and around this Canadian province. The opening scene of the movie, where we see the arrival of Leonardo from an international seminar, was filmed in the city of Richmond. Specifically, the Vancouver International Airport, which is located on the outskirts of this city, was used to capture the exterior scene.

A medium-sized luxurious house, located near the Iona Beach Regional Park was used to film the outdoor shots of the affluent businessman’s home shown in the film. As the filming permissions were arranged in advance, the production members readily captured the outdoor shots. However, in order to film the interior shots of the home, the crew had to make minor changes to the overall decor inside the property. Sequences depicting the neighborhood of Leonardo were also filmed in the same area.

Other major sequences were then filmed in the business area of Richmond. A vacant corporate office was turned around by the crew in no time. This place was used to depict the former office of Mr. Montenegro before he was diagnosed with amnesia.

The crew then moved to the other part of Richmond, to film the ending sequence of the movie. Special lighting equipment was used to film the final scene at dusk, at a secluded place near Garry Point Park. Filming lasted till the last week of November 2017, after which the crew began working on the promotion of the film.

The basic premise of Overboard is centered around the character of Leonardo Montenegro, an affluent and futuristic businessman. At the very beginning of the movie, Leonardo appears to conduct a special meeting with his foreign clients, over a massive business deal. However, because of the surmounting pressure to land the deal, the lead actor misbehaves with his assistant, Kate.

Later in the film, when Leonard gets diagnosed with severe signs of amnesia, Kate wants to capitalize on the opportunity to get square with her employer.
