The basic premise of Phenomenon revolves around the character of George Malley, a middle-aged American man living in North Carolina. The story gets interesting when George gets the power of telekinesis and other supernatural abilities after witnessing an ethereal event.

Gerald Di Pego wrote the screenplay, while Michael Taylor and Charles Newirth co-produced this project. Phenomenon collected several prestigious nominations and won 7 major awards over the years. Where Was Phenomenon Filmed? Let’s Know This Romantic Drama Movie Closely!

As I mentioned earlier, the premise of Phenomenon is set in North Carolina. However, Jon Turtelaub decided to shoot this film in California.  Jon was certain about the filming locations since the beginning of the project. So, before investing his time in any other area, Jon and a couple of other assistant directors traveled to California in search of ideal shooting locations.

But, even though Jon was sure about the type of location he wanted, the production members still struggled to find a perfect match. After searching through a lot of potential filming locations in and around Los Angeles and San Francisco, the director finally found the perfect location in Auburn, California.

In fact, Jon was so impressed with the overall setting of the location that he decided to shoot all outdoor scenes of Phenomenon in and around Auburn. So, after the main filming locations were selected, the production members started the shooting process. The principal photography began in the second week of October 1995 and ended before the eve of Christmas. The production members traveled to different areas in Auburn in order to capture the outdoor scenes.

But, during the first phase of filming, the production members mostly filmed around the same location in Auburn. However, the remaining outdoor scenes were filmed in different locations with different settings. The second phase of filming was comparatively longer than the first phase. However, it was way more challenging for the production members to capture the first half of the movie.

Auburn | California

The city of Auburn is an integral part of Placer County. This beautiful city is not only picturesque but also has a lot of historical significance. In fact, a particular location in Auburn is even registered as a California Historical Landmark. The opening scene of the film, where we see the lead actor in Dr. Brunder’s office, was actually filmed inside Sierra Moon Goldsmith. This shop was located at 107 Sacramento St, Auburn. The production members had to turn around the entire look of the shop to make it look like a clinic.

However, this shop was later demolished and doesn’t exist anymore. Other important scenes of the movie were captured near 1583 Lincoln Way and Washington St. The sequence where the lead actor goes to the local bar with his friends was filmed inside Old Shanghai Bar, located at 289 Washington St, Auburn. Meanwhile, the sequences depicting the lead actor’s family home were shot inside a medium-sized house located at 100 Apple Lane, Auburn, California.

After all these outdoor shots were captured, the production members moved to San Francisco. The remaining interior scenes of the movie were shot inside a studio located in the downtown area of San Francisco. The story of Phenomenon revolves around the character of George Malley, a middle-aged American man living in North Carolina. As the story progresses further, the lead actor decides to take a day off and visit the countryside.
