Where Was Rawhide Filmed? Let’s Know This Western Drama Series Closely!

The story of Rawhide is set in and around the state of Texas. Towards the end of the show, the story world also expands to the state of Arizona. However, none of the episodes were filmed in Texas throughout the seven seasons.

The makers of Rawhide decided not to film in and around the state of Texas primarily due to two main reasons. Firstly, due to a lack of production budget and secondly, because of the low number of filming crew available in the state during the time of the shooting.

Thus, to work around these main problems, the makers of Rawhide arranged a meeting and then asked the production members to scout for ideal filming locations in California. Also, it’s important to mention that the majority of the sequences were captured around this western state.

While some sequences of the show were also filmed in and around the state of New Mexico and the southern part of Arizona, the principal photography commenced towards the end of 1958 and continued for several months. The first season of Rawhide was captured during this time.

Other seasons of the show were filmed in the later years and took nearly the same amount of time to get filmed. Let us know more about these filming locations and how this successful series was shot.

So without any further ado, let’s discuss where was Rawhide filmed.

California | USA

The opening sequence from the pilot season of Rawhide, where we are introduced to the characters of Gil and Rowdy for the first time, was actually filmed in California. The production members traveled to a place located near Simi Valley.

The sequences depicting Gil’s ranch in Texas were filmed inside Big Sky Ranch, located at 4927 Bennett Road. The production members took special shooting permission from the owners of this ranch and made certain adjustments to the stables and other fixtures.

As per reports, the same ranch owners also helped the production members acquire farm animals, which were later used for shooting. The filming crew captured several other outdoor shots around Simi Valley and then moved to the next shooting location in California.

Additional exterior sequences of Rawhide were captured near Lone Pine, Paso Robles, and Thousand Oaks, after which the production members moved to Arizona.

Arizona, New Mexico | USA

The remaining interior sequences of the show were filmed inside Apacheland Studios, located at 4369 South Kings Ranch Road, Gold Canyon, Arizona. But before capturing these iconic interior shots, the production members filmed a number of outdoor scenes around the state of Arizona.

Outdoor scenes in Arizona were filmed near San Xavier, Benson, and Sonoita. A couple of important scenes were also filmed in Tumacacori National Historical Park and New Mexico.

Finally, the production returned to the state of California and filmed some important scenes inside CBS Studio Center located at 4024 Studio Center, Radford City, Los Angeles.
