The basic premise of The Garden of Evil revolves around two famed environmentalists who visit the Amazonian rainforest. However, after arriving in the jungle, the conservationists are attacked by unknown creatures, who hack one of them to death.

Now, before I share other interesting details of this award-winning documentary, let us first take a closer look at where The Garden of Evil was filmed.

Where Was The Garden Of Evil Filmed? Let’s Know This Riveting Documentary Closely!

Larry Keating wanted to establish a close connection between the two attacks, which took place in Amazon, although 16 years apart. In other words, Keating attempted to expose the real kingpins of Brazil, who use the covert routes of Amazon for drug trafficking through this documentary.

But before Larry began working on this project, he arranged a meeting with the real conservationist who survived the fatal attacks in 2001. After listening to their accounts, Larry requested Pete Bethune and Ciao Vella to be a part of this project and share their inspiring story with the rest of the world.

The real footage was gathered from the survivalists at first. However, the remaining portions were filmed in other parts of Amazon. Larry consciously refrained from filming scenes near the locations in Amazon where the conservationists were attacked.

The director thought that jeopardizing the lives of these conservationists for the second time in Amazon wouldn’t necessarily be a good idea. So after the first meeting with Peter and Caio was over, Larry asked his filming crew to scout around certain locations near the Amazon Port.

Larry clearly explained the sort of background he was looking for to his team members and later visited the locations in person to select them for filming. The principal photography began in late 2020.

Shooting continued for several weeks, as the crew had to record the accounts of the survivalists who were located in different locations and later merge them with the real footage. So let us now take a closer look at the exact filming locations and discuss where was The Garden of Evil film.

Amazon | Brazil

Shooting began at the Port of Manaus in Brazil. The production members captured several outdoor shots near this busy port, which is located on the Rio Negro, Manaus. The scenes which were filmed here mainly showcase the indigenous tribes who operate in this riverport.

Other outdoor shots were captured around different areas of the Amazonas. In order to access the dense part of the Amazon jungle, high-speed drones mounted with special cameras were used. This was mainly done to ensure the safety of the filming crew from wild animals and drug traffickers.

After these scenes were captured, the camera crew returned to New Zealand and waited for Larry’s instructions.

Other Filming Locations

The second phase of filming commenced in New Zealand. The recorded scenes were then merged with the real footage which was captured by Peter during his expedition. A well-equipped studio located in the downtown area of Christchurch was used by the production members to recreate the events of the lost footage.

The shooting process came to an end after the real survivalists shared their accounts and did the voiceovers. After the filming stopped, production members began working on promoting this documentary.
