To presume the present day and age being the only period in which the  society is seen to be plagued with ostentatious lifestyle and avarice would be inaccurate. Allow me to share with you a web series The Gilded Age that showcases pomp of the past and let you know where was The Gilded Age filmed.

Julian Fellowes’ new drama web series directed by Michael Engler and Salli Richardson Whitefield The Gilded Age, named after the era itself signifies the period in American history, when extravagance and abuse of power was in top form.

This historical drama released in 2022, revolves around the life of a young orphaned girl Marian Brook, who moves into New York city to live with her aunt. The main lead is shown to be caught between two stools as she witnesses the luxurious lifestyle of her neighbors (Railroad Tycoon)  and the firm rules laid by her aunt (Ada brook) that commands her not to step out of tradition.

Will Marian be able to follow her heart? Or is the cacophony of New York city in The Gilded age going to suppress her inner voice? Read this article to know more about The Gilded Age and where was The Gilded Age filmed. For now, let’s get started with the plot.

The Plot Of The Gilded Age | What’s It About

The writer’s reputation precedes him, and rightfully so because after making historical drama like Downton Abbey which is revered among the viewers, The Gilded Age was well received as well.

As the name suggests, the series is set between the era from 1870 to 1900 in US history, where industrialization was thriving with barely any restriction or regulation laid by the government. Which the rich and affluent communities used to their advantage to make more money! The country saw a huge surge in cheap laborers immigrating from distinct parts of the world to set up their new lives in America.

However, the divide in class and status was not observed just between the deep-pocketed families and poor families, but amongst the opulence themselves. Someone who had acquired wealth during the recent past, was looked down upon by those who were “loaded” from one generation to the other.

This is exactly what director Julian Fellowes aspires to portray, and he succeeded in doing so by collaborating with director Michael Engler and Salli Richardson Whitefield showcasing the similar sort of snobbery through the characters of the series. Although the main lead of the series Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) after moving in to New York, keeps no such rigidity in her thinking.

The Gilded Age hosts a number of stars in its cast members such as Morgan Spector, Cynthia Nixon, Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski and many more, making the hour-long episodes even more glamorous and anticipated.

The drama series is available on HBO max but to find more options checkout where to watch The Gilded Age for free. Enjoy other newly released web series of 2022 as well. But for now let’s find out where was the Gilded Age filmed.

Michael and his production team did not think it was a feasible ideal to go back in time, to capture the kosher splendor of the era. Instead they chose to stay back home and explore other options to recreate the golden era in American history, and present it masterfully to the audience.

Historic Mansions | Newport, Rhode Island

Set in 1880’s, the webseries’ entire idea aspires to encompass grandeur of the time in America, and it was relatively easier for the production team to achieve as historic mansions of the mentioned time-period were still intact and well maintained.

You’d be surprised to know that it’s possible for you to pay a visit to the filming locations of The Gilded Age. Yes, I’ll definitely share more about how to do so, but first let’s checkout the actual locations that were used in the series such as Château-sur-Mer, Hunter House, Rosecliff, The Elms, Marble House and The Breakers

The Marble House | Château-sur-Mer

George Russell’s bedroom in his new mansion was actually shot at Marble House in Consuelo Vanderbilt’s bedroom, Other scenes such as the Russells’ kitchen where the french chef and other culinary artist are seen to work, was in fact shot in the kitchen at The Elms

The scenes involving Mrs. Fish were filmed in Château-sur-Mer to replicate her home, and the Great Hall and Dining Room are also shown as  places for her to host tea-parties.

Russells’ first ball in their new mansion was shot at The Breakers Music Room, which in reality is an art by itself. The Music Room is said to be constructed in France, and for it to reach. Newport, it had to be disassembled before shipping and reassembled once it completed its transit and reached America. The neoclassical architecture on The Rosecliff Mansion replicated Mr. Chamberlains adobe

With so many scenes being shot in and out of Newport, Rhode Island, it was easier for the production to plan things ahead of time as not much was wasted in traveling to different parts of the country or the world for that matter!

Locations From The Movie For You To Visit

Most of the mansions that are mentioned above like The Elms, Marble House and The Breakers are open daily from 10am to 5pm, whereas The Rosecliff Mansion only remains open from 10am to 3pm.
