So, after discussing with the other creative heads of the unit, the director arrived at the final conclusion to film The Green Knight in and around the country of Ireland. A number of personnel from the unit were sent to further inspect the specific filming locations in Ireland, before the principal photography commenced in March 2019. The shooting lasted for a little over two months, during which the crew traveled to some of the most iconic places in this beautiful country and captured pivotal sequences. County Tipperary, Munster | Ireland

The first filming location that the production crew arrived, at was in the County of Tipperary. This historical county is an integral part of the Munster province of Ireland, surrounded by greenery and beautiful mountains. The opening scene of the film was captured near Cahir Castle. Before the filming began in the town of Cahir, the production crew already pre-arranged most of the equipment and logistics, which later immensely helped the unit to quickly get those delivered at the filming spot.

Exterior shots of the castle were filmed over a period of two weeks, and then the filming crew captured some outdoor shots of the surroundings and moved to the next shooting location.

Tullamore, County Offaly | Ireland

The majority of the filming took place in and around the County of Offaly, specifically in the county town of Tullamore. The historical Charleville Forest Castle was used to film the sequences of the lord’s castle shown in the film. In the final quarter of the film, Sir Gawain is shown to arrive at this same castle to duel with “The Green Knight”. 

The Charleville Forest Castle is one of the major heritage sites of Ireland, thus in order to film the interior sequences inside the castle, the production members had to arrange special filming permission from the government. The crew carefully captured the interior scenes, without causing any damage to the historical fixtures inside Charleville, and then moved to the outer section to film the exterior shots.

The production members then arrived at the capital of Ireland and finished filming the remaining scenes. A highly renowned studio with well-equipped sound stages was used to film the interior sequences of the film. The crew constructed a make-believe set to shoot the final sequence of the film inside the same studio.

The story of The Green Knight is centered around the character of Gawain, a talented young warrior, who takes on the challenge to defeat the mysterious knight.
