The director took this decision after scouting through various filming locations in Montana during the initial stage of production. But after he couldn’t find any location which matched the backdrop he was looking for, he decided not to film any scenes in Montana.

After several attempts, eventually, the director of The Hanging Tree and his team were able to select a bunch of ideal shooting locations within the state of Washington. After checking the locations in person, the director asked his crew to commence shooting.

The principal photography of The Hanging Tree began in the third week of June 1958 and continued till the third week of August. The production members didn’t face any major issues during the course of the shooting.

However, after the filming process was completed, the filming crew faced major problems during the post-production process. This eventually led to the release date of the movie getting delayed.

Other than that, the production members were able to complete the shooting process without any noticeable hassle. All logistic items were arranged in advance, which actually helped the crew to stay on top of filming dates.

The shooting process of The Hanging Tree commenced in the state of Washington. The opening scene of the film, where we see the character of Joseph Frail in the small town of Skull Creek, was actually filmed in Goose Prairie, Washington.

This sparsely populated area is situated 41 miles northwest of Yakima County. Famous wildlife conservationist Tom Fife founded this place and named it after a beautiful goose he saw there.

After the production members captured the visuals of the opening scene, they moved to the next filming location in Washington.

Other important scenes of the movie were captured in other beautiful locations within Yakima County. The scene where the angry mob chases the young guys from Skull Creek to a nearby village was also filmed around the same location.

The final quarter of the movie was filmed near the Nile, which is also a sparsely populated area located 6 miles north of Goose Prairie. The sequences of the movie depicting the gold mining town in Montana were actually filmed here.

After the production members captured all the shots, the shooting process was wrapped.

The story of The Hanging Tree revolves around the character of Joseph Frail, a middle-aged American doctor by profession but a crook at heart. At the very beginning of the movie, the lead actor appears to save a young man from an angry mob who accused him of stealing.

As the story progresses further, the petty thief offers his gratitude to the doctor and then begins to leave the town. However, Joseph quickly refuses to negotiate with the young man and forces him to stay back. Shortly after, the lead actor makes the young man follow his orders and basically uses him as a stooge.
