The makers of The Last Song originally wanted to shoot in the state of North Carolina, the same place where the story of the film is set in. However, after reviewing the nominal production budget, the production unit started looking for beautiful places in and around America, which are less expensive to film in.

Soon, the unit came up with potential filming locations in Georgia. Director Robinson after conferring with other creative heads of the unit finalized a couple of locations in Georgia. Robinson consciously took this decision to take advantage of the lucrative filming tax credit offered by this state. The principal photography began in the summer of 2009 and was completed within two months or so. 

There were particular reports of mishaps which adversely impacted the filming schedule. Although the crew struggled a bit in managing the crowd at certain filming spots in Georgia. Tybee Island, Georgia | USA

In order to capture the opening sequence of the film, the production arrived in the city of Tybee Island. This small barrier island city was perfect to portray the hometown of Ronnie in the film. The white sandy beaches with a lush backdrop attract filmmakers and artists from all over the globe, who often visit this place to seek inspiration.

Likewise, the character of Ronnie was also shown to often spend her time alone from the bustle of the city, relaxing on the shoreline. The production unit extensively captured beautiful outdoor shots of South Beach, and later moved to the outskirts of the city. A small-sized home located in the exterior part of Tybee Island was used to capture the outdoor scenes of Ronnie’s house.

Savannah, Atlanta, Georgia | USA

After the completion of filming in Tybee Island, the production moved to the neighboring city of Savannah. Pivotal sequences were filmed here, including the one where Ronnie gets to meet the love of her life, Will Blakelee. The Wormsloe Plantation located at 7601 Skidway Road in Savannah, was used to capture the sequence of Ronnie and Will’s first romantic date.

Then, finally, the production moved to the last filming location, in the capital city of Georgia. Not a lot of outdoor shots were filmed here, except for a few scenes at the Georgia Aquarium located in the heart of Atlanta. The majority of the interior sequences were shot inside a well-equipped studio with technologically advanced sound stages. Filming in Atlanta lasted for two weeks, after which the members began working on post-production.
