The makers of The Legend of Tarzan wanted to shoot the entire film in Africa. So, during the stages of pre-production, scout potential filming locations in and around the African jungle were scouted by the crew.

After several weeks, the production members submitted the list of locations in Africa to the director. Yates was satisfied with the overall look of the location as well. However, when the production members couldn’t arrange the required permission for shooting, the locations had to be changed.

Yates, then conferred with other creative heads of the unit, and arrived at the final conclusion, to shoot The Legend of Tarzan in two parts. The filming of the first part took place in and around England. Whereas a few pivotal sequences were filmed in the central African country of Gabon.

The principal photography began in the last week of June 2014 and continued till the first week of October, of the same year. Reportedly, the shooting schedule remained unaltered, for the most part. The filming crew worked tirelessly and managed to stay on top of the shooting dates.

Where Was The Legend Of Tarzan Filmed? An Action Adventure Flick From 2016!!

The opening sequence of the movie, where we see the reformed character of John Clayton, was actually filmed on location. The production members traveled to the county of Hertfordshire to film the majority of the sequences.

The sequences depicting the 18th-century country house were captured inside Gaddesden Place, located at 6 Hemel Hempstead. Special shooting permission had to be taken, before filming the interior sequences inside this country house.

Additional sequences in Hertfordshire were captured near the Ashridge Estate. Exciting sequences depicting the “Village of Grass Huts” in the movie were captured here. The production members had to turn around the overall setting of the place, to make it look like a hamlet.

Other outdoor sequences had to be filmed using CGI and VFX. Thus in order to do the same, the production members traveled to the northern part of Watford. The famous Leavesden Studios located at Warner Drive, Leavesden was used to film most of the interior sequences of the movie. 

The backlot and the well-equipped C Stage of the same studio were specifically used to recreate the enthralling sequences of the movie. Filming in Hertfordshire lasted for 8 weeks, after which the production members moved to London and captured the remaining scenes in England.

After filming the majority of the sequences in England, the production members moved to the central African country of Gabon. Only a handful, yet pivotal sequences of the movie were captured in and around this beautiful country. 

The production members mounted high-definition cameras on the helicopter and captured the aerial shots of the jungle shown in the film. The entire filming process was completed by the first week of October 2014. The production members then returned to the primary unit and began working on other areas of post-production.
