During the initial stages of production, the maker of The White Lotus, Mike White, wasn’t completely sure about the filming location of the series. Thus, to clear his doubts, he arranged a special meeting with other creative heads of the unit and discussed the required setting and backdrop for the show.

Some members suggested Mike shoot inside a studio in California, while others advised him to shoot inside a real luxury resort. The latter option made more sense to Mike, and he decided to shoot the pilot season of The White Lotus in and around the exotic locations of Hawaii and Four Seasons Resort Maui.

With the production budget being comparatively higher than most other contemporary series, Mike had the option to experiment with different types of locations and filming techniques. That’s exactly what he did in the second season of the series. The second season was filmed in the beautiful country of Italy.

The principal photography for the first season commenced in the last week of October 2020 and was completed within 8 weeks. The second season, however, took several months to shoot, as the filming schedule was delayed for a number of reasons.

Hawaii | USA

As mentioned, the makers decided to use an actual luxury resort to depict the scenes of “White Lotus Resort” in the series. Thus during the initial stages of production, the crew acquired filming permissions from the administrative body of Four Seasons Resort in Maui. 

That’s right guys, the sequences showcased in the series, were filmed inside the posh and luxurious Four Seasons Resort Maui. The camera crew, although, were strictly instructed to maintain the privacy of the other guests of the resort, during the course of shooting.

As soon as the interior and outdoor shots of the resort chain were captured, the production members filmed some more pivotal scenes in Maui. Outdoor sequences near the Ho’okipa Beach Park and Hana Highway were filmed. Special drones fitted with high-definition cameras were used to capture the top shots of the shoreline, as well.

After the outdoor shots were captured, the crew returned to California and used a well-equipped studio to film the remaining interior sequences for the first season.

Sicily | Italy

The makers were pretty satisfied with the last filming contract with Four Seasons Hotel Chain. Thus when the idea of filming the second season in Italy, came into Mike’s mind, the administrative body of the hotel chain was contacted again. 

The production members successfully landed a deal with the Four Seasons again and agreed to use the San Domenico Palace for shooting the second season of The White Lotus. This infamous luxury hotel is located on the eastern coast of Sicily, specifically in the hilltop town of Taormina.

The production members captured several outdoor shots of this beautiful town to depict the establishing scenes for the second season. But, before the filming began inside the San Domenico Palace, the production members ran into a huge problem.

One of the main cast members got injured while trying out adventure sports with other actors. Reportedly, the actor had to be rushed to hospital and took several weeks to recover. This incident along with some more, delayed the filming schedule by a number of months.

Thankfully, the shooting eventually commenced inside the luxurious property, when the actor was declared fit for shooting. A few other pivotal sequences were captured around the harbour city of Messina. The entire shooting process was wrapped by the end of September last year, after which the crew returned to America and began working on the promotion for the series.
