Netflix’s Archive 81 was mainly shot in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Only a handful of scenes were shot in Allegheny County. As the story of the show is set in New York City, several locations in Pennsylvania were utilized as stand-ins for one of America’s global cities.

Principal photography of the supernatural horror series began in November 2020 and was wrapped by the end of March 2021. It is not common knowledge but several Netflix original shows are filmed in the state of Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh. 

The production team and the cast of the show shot in multiple locations in and around the Pittsburgh downtown area. They filmed at the Boulevard of the Allies near Market Square and Point University which is located at 201 Wood Street.

Another location where a number of important scenes were shot was The Blaqk House Collections which is an art gallery situated at 440 First Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh. The office that we see in the show where Martin Donovan’s character, Virgil, works, was shot in a building at 11 Stanwix Street.

Filming of Archive 81 also took place in the northern side of Pittsburgh, which is located to the north of the Allegheny and Ohio river. Numerous scenes including some of the vital ones were filmed on the extremely busy street of East Ohio. These scenes were stand-ins for New York City. 

The production team spent a significant amount of time filming outside The Government Center, which is an independent record shop situated at 715 East Street. They also shot in Bernie’s Photo Center at 523 East Ohio Street. Interestingly, Bernie’s Photo Center was transformed into a hardware and videography store for the filming of a particular scene.

A few other prominent locations in Pittsburgh that were shown in the supernatural horror series include East Liberty Presbyterian Church which is situated at 116 South Highland Avenue, and The Rex Theater at 1602 East Carson Street, which has been shut down for good. A couple of scenes were also shot in Ritter’s Diner at 5221 Baum Boulevard. 

One notable location that all residents of Pittsburgh can very quickly recognize on the show is the Tudor-style Hartwood Acres Mansion at 200 Hartwood Acres.

As we mentioned, a handful of scenes were also shot in Pittsburgh’s Allegheny County. Marshall Town is the place where some of the scenes were shot. It is located less than 20 miles from the city of Pittsburgh. However, most of the scenes that were shot in Marshall Town were on soundstage. Specifically, all the indoor scenes were shot here.
