Thus in order to present an original story that sheds light on both sides of the coin, the makers of Blood & Water decided to film on location in different parts of South Africa, initially.

However, after the potential filming locations were scouted, the unit arrived at the final conclusion to film the series in and around the capital city of South Africa. Following this, production camps were set in Cape Town and the principal photography commenced in November 2019 for season 1. Every other season that followed almost took 3-4 months to complete as well. No major issues delayed the primary filming schedule, as the crew pre-arranged most of the logistics and filming permissions. Cape Town | South Africa

After arranging all the necessary shooting equipment, logistics and other filming permissions, the crew began filming the sequences for the first season. Several exterior shots near the downtown area of Cape Town were captured to depict the establishing scenes.

The crew then traveled to a place near Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum to capture the outdoor scenes of Khumalo’s home. A small-sized house with pearly white fences and a red roof was used to portray the exterior part of the female lead’s abode. The scenes depicting the infamous crime syndicate of South Africa were also filmed here.

The production members then took special filming permissions from the administrative authorities of the University of Cape Town to shoot inside the premises. Several sequences throughout the three seasons of Blood & Water depicting the fictional Parkhurst College were filmed here. 

For season 2 specifically, the majority of the filming took place in and around the Cape Town City Hall. While a few scenes were also filmed inside the famous Bay Hotel located in Camps Bay for season 3. As mentioned earlier filming for each season lasted for about 12-16 weeks. The above-mentioned places in Cape Town are where the outdoor shots were captured. But in order to shoot the interior sequences the production unit used two different studios in South Africa over the course of 3 exciting seasons.

The basic premise of Blood & Water covers the inspiring journey of Puleng Khumalo, a South African teenager, who embarks on a journey to find her real sister. At the very beginning of the series, we are acquainted with the parents of Khumalo who have consciously kept her from the whereabouts of her lost sister.

Later as the story progresses, the subplot of the female lead’s romantic relationship emerges. Other aspects of Khumalo’s character are explored, when one day she suddenly comes across video footage of a girl that resembled her sister, to a far extent.
