Director Matt Sobel in his film Goodnight Mommy, does not deviate much from the primary story that was shown in the original Austrian version of the film (Ich seh, Ich seh), released in 2014.

The movie begins by showing twin brothers – Lukas and Elias (played by Nikolas and Cameron Crovetti respectively), arriving at their mother’s home, to find her face wrapped up with bandages. Elias soon realizes the change in her demeanor and begins to speculate that he is living with an impostor.

The movie towards the end, however, shows a backstory, where Elias and Lukas are shown to be living a perfect and happy life with their father and mother. A misunderstanding forces the mother to get seperated and move to a new home. 

Elias is shown as a schizophrenic, who imagines his dead brother Lukas, to be alive and playing with him, and is not confronted by her mother with the truth. This delusion of Elias, soon fizzles out to be fatal for her mother, as he suspects her mother to be an impersonator, and ends up killing her and himself.

Where Was Goodnight Mommy Filmed? Let’s Know The Movie Closely!!

Director Matt Sobel along with his crew and cinematographer, decided to shoot Goodnight Mommy, entirely in America. The filming was done in and around the state of New York and New Jersey. Somerset County and New York City were chosen as the central locations for filming the movie. Now, let’s take a closer look at the specific locations that were used for filming.

Somerset County | New Jersey

The American remake of the horror-thriller film Goodnight Mommy (Ich Seh, Ich Seh) began shooting the majority of the sequences in Somerset County, New Jersey. The production began filming in May 2021 and completed it in almost one and a half months time! 

Bedminster Township, located at the north central part of New Jersey, served as the location for filming the initial scenes in the film. The production crew shot the indoor and outdoor sequences in a country house that had to be constructed and was later taken down by them.

However, to shoot the burning barn sequence in the film, where Elias mischievously hides from his mother and later lights up the barn, special permissions had to be taken. The crew was instructed to get the clearance from Far-Hills Bedminster Fire Department, after consulting with the Township Committee.

The scene where Elias is seen in the movie, spending most of the time around a lake, was filmed at a nearby lake. The production team filmed these sequences early in the morning to avoid any sort of disturbance from the public. But later the scenes were portrayed on screen as evening, when Elias and Lukas would go out to play.

Some other great films like The Coup and Aviary Earth were also filmed here, although in a different part of the town.

Brooklyn, New York

Few other outdoor sequences showing the backstory of the family, were filmed at this location. The scenes which showed Lukas and Elias’ previous house, when they were living with their father and mother, were shot here showcasing a small and cozy home.

The production and cast members were also identified lensing few other scenes at a different area in Brooklyn, although those scenes did not make it through the final cut during the post production process.

One of the highly populated boroughs of New York City, filming in Brooklyn ironically was not challenging at all. The production unit was well prepared in advance with the logistics and crew members while they were shooting a handful of final scenes at this location.

Legendary TV shows, such as Rick and Morty, Only Murders in the Building, The Sopranos and F.R.I.E.N.D.S. were also filmed at the same location.
