Jonze was massively inspired by the basic idea of the article, which spoke about the development of a close relationship between humans and robots in future. This same spark of inspiration provoked him to write up an innovative script which later transpired to become the screenplay of Her.

So after initially speaking with the other creative heads of the unit, Jonze arrived at the final conclusion to shoot Her in and around different places in California. But inorder to showcase a futuristic look of the bustling city of Los Angeles, the director convinced the other members to film certain sequences in China. Thus, after revisiting the potential filming locations in person, Spike gave the green signal to commence shooting. The principal photography began in May 2012 and took 6 weeks to complete. The majority of the sequences were captured in Los Angeles over the period of a month, while the scenes in China were filmed in just two weeks.

The opening sequence of Her was shot in the downtown area of Los Angeles. The production unit used one of the apartments of WaterMarke Tower located at 705 West 9^th Street, to capture the interior sequences of Theodore’s home. The inside decor of the small apartment was pretty minimalistic and Jonze specifically asked the crew to not make any changes, except for the lighting.

Then the crew moved to the other part of the city at 400 South Hope Street to capture the outdoor shots of Theodore’s office building. A vacant office inside the same location was turned around by the members to recreate the interior look of Theodore’s work area. A few other outdoor scenes were captured near Long Beach and West Hollywood, after which the members scouted a lively restaurant located at 120 South Los Angeles St. and filmed the sequence of the divorce.

Additional pivotal sequences were filmed in the Pacific Design Centre area and Walt Disney Concert Hall, situated at 111 South Grand Avenue, before moving on to shoot the final sequence at Santa Monica Pier.

Shanghai | China

After the completion of filming the majority of the sequences in California, the production members traveled overseas to the beautiful and culturally-rich country of China. So in order to portray the outdoor scenes of the futuristic city of Los Angeles, the production members extensively filmed in Shanghai. The Wujiaochang area in Shanghai was mainly used to capture the exterior sequences, while some scenes were also filmed in Lujiazui. As mentioned earlier, filming in China lasted for about two weeks, and then the crew returned to America and finished shooting the remaining interior sequences inside a studio in Hollywood.
