The timeless romantic drama film, Island in the Sun, released in 1957 was inspired by a novel by Alec Waugh of the same name, published two years prior to the film. Director Robert Rossen in his version of the film presents the love story of a number of characters deriving from different ethnic races. And their struggle to validate their legit relationship in front of a racist society.

Island in the Sun, was received well by audiences and critics upon its release. Although this film also gathered some harsh criticism from the media for depicting interracial relationships and other touchy topics of the time. That sort of unnerved the upper-echeloned whites. Resulting the film grossing over $5 million in total box office collections.

The opening scene of the film where we see the character of Maxwell invested in a heated conversation with his sister Jocelyn, was filmed in Barbados. The production unit shot the majority of the film on this Island Country. A make-believe set was constructed by the crew to depict Fleury’s home on the fictional island of Santa Marta. The interior sequence of the home was filmed during the day, as the power cuts in the area of Speightstown made filming during the night impossible for the crew.

The production unit, after filming the establishing scenes of the movie, moved to Grenada, another Island Country in the West Indies. The sequence where the character of Colonel Whittingham is introduced was captured on the main Island of Grenada, which interestingly is also called Grenada. Some other exterior shots were filmed near Carenage Harbour, after which the crew moved on to the next location.

Finally, the crew arrived at the last filming location in the Caribbean Islands. The ending sequence of the film, where Maxwell is shown to confess his crime, and later gets incarcerated by the Colonel, was filmed in Trinidad and Tobago, specifically near the Port of Spain area. The production unit arranged special permission from the government to shoot inside a real prison, located in the capital.

The remaining interior shots were captured inside Elstree Studios, located in Hertfordshire after the production unit returned back to England. Soon the filming process was completed and the unit began working on other areas, such as post-production and marketing.
