The makers of Jack Ryan decided to film the third season of the show in Europe. Thus after the second season was released in 2019, the makers wanted to commence filming for the third season as well. However, due to the onset of Covid-19, the production members could not scout ideal filming locations in Europe. 

Later, when the travel bans were uplifted by the European countries, the production members then looked for the perfect shooting locations across the eastern and central parts of Europe. Finally, Hungary and the Czech Republic were selected as the prime filming locations for the third season of Jack Ryan.

The principal photography began in May 2021 and took several months to complete. The filming schedule was delayed for a number of issues that the production members had to face, in the mentioned central European countries. The entire filming process was completed by the second month of 2022.

Budapest, Hungary

The opening sequence of Jack Ryan season 3, was filmed in the capital city of Hungary. The production members finally arrived in the beautiful city of Budapest, to capture the briefing sequence of Jack’s covert mission.

The central European country of Hungary, which was historically an integral part of the USSR from 1949-89, was used by the makers to depict the first former Soviet Union country, where Jack is deployed. The makers wanted to present historically correct facts to the audience, and thus decided to film in an authentic location.

Several outdoor shots were captured near Hero’s Square and Hungarian Parliament Building. High-level security clearance was acquired by the production members, before capturing exterior scenes near the parliament. All in all, sequences depicting the first part of Jack’s covert mission were filmed in and around different places in Budapest. The members then moved to the Czech Republic and captured the remaining sequences.

Prague, Czech Republic

After the production members arrived in the Czech Republic, they ran into a major problem. The filming permissions which were pre-arranged by the members were nullified by the government on arrival. This incident caused the filming schedule to get delayed for a number of weeks.

However, after the permissions were re-acquired, the members started preparing for capturing the outdoor sequences of Jack’s final mission. Several exterior shots were taken near Old Town Square. A car chase sequence was filmed here, and a special car and trained stuntmen were brought in by the members. Other pivotal outdoor shots in Prague were filmed around the Petrin Tower and St. Vitus Cathedral.

 Filming of all the major sequences was completed by the end of January 2022. The crew then traveled overseas to Canada, and used a renowned studio in Montreal, to recreate the interior sequences.
