The story takes a sharp turn when the lead actor almost loses his mind while fighting on the battlefield.

Where Was Jarhead Filmed? Let’s Know This War Drama Film Closely!

The story of Jarhead is set in California and the Arabian Peninsula. But you’d be quite surprised to know that the outdoor scenes of the Middle East were actually filmed in America. The director refrained from shooting in the Middle East because of political reasons. Other than that, the government of America also didn’t give security clearance to the production members to travel to the Middle East. So, in order to capture the sequences depicting the rough and arid backdrop of Kuwait, the production members had to come up with another solution.

So, right at the beginning of this project, the production members traveled to California and searched for ideal filming locations. The director wanted to capture the sequences of the Marine training base in and around California. However, in order to replicate the rough terrain of Kuwait, the director initially thought of shooting outdoor scenes in Texas. But, when the production members came up with the scouted locations, the director didn’t approve them.

Instead, he asked the production members to look for other shooting locations in and around the state of Arizona. A couple of weeks later, the filming crew came up with suitable filming locations in Arizona and then asked the director for his final decision. Sam Mendes was quite impressed with the overall look of the scouted locations. Other than that, the director was also happy because the location cost was less as compared to the scouted locations in Texas.

The principal photography of Jarhead began in the first week of December 2004 and continued for several months. The majority of the outdoor shots were filmed in California during the starting phase of shooting. However, after the first phase was over, the production members traveled to Arizona and filmed the remaining outdoor scenes for the second half of the movie. The entire shooting process of Jarhead continued till the final week of April 2005.
