Verona has always been considered as the city of love. Since time immemorial romantic artists have set their sights on the picturesque landscape of this beautiful Italian city. Gary Winick, the director of Letters to Juliet too, was mesmerized by the same beauty.

So, while Rivera and Sullivan were writing the screenplay for this project, the director asked them to include a number of Italian locations that he held close to his heart. While choosing the filming locations for Letters to Juliet, Winick decided to shoot the majority of the scenes in Italy.

However, during the initial stages of production Winick also scouted around the iconic city of New York, looking for potential filming locations. After the shooting locations in New York were finalized by Winick and his team, they moved overseas to Italy.

A number of potential shooting sites were scouted by the team in and around the central region of Tuscany, Italy. As soon as these locations were checked by the director for the second time, he instructed the crew to look for some more locations in the Veneto region.

By the end of August 2009, all the filming locations of Letters to Juliet were finalized by Winick and his team, after which they prepared for shooting.

The principal photography of Letters to Juliet commenced in the second week of September 2009 and continued until the third week of November of the same year. The first phase of shooting was done in and around the city of New York and took almost a month to complete.

Although, before the production members could capture the scenes inside this commercial building, they had to make certain changes and install special lights. After all of this was done, over the course of 1 month, the production members then traveled overseas to Italy.

The second phase of shooting commenced in the Tuscany region. This beautiful region is located in the central region of Italy and comprises Florence, Pisa, and other major Italian cities. Each year, a number of art connoisseurs and art exhibitionists arrange special events in Tuscany to showcase world-famous Renaissance artworks, statues of Michaelangelo, and paintings of Botticelli.

Coming back to Letters to Juliet, the second phase of shooting was done in the city of Siena. The sequences where the female lead appears to explore the streets of Italy were shot near Pienza, Siena.

The final quarter of Letters to Juliet was shot entirely in the Veneto region, which is located in the northeastern part of Italy. The sequences where the young and aspiring author meets with other novelists and other members of the romantic group, were all filmed in Verona.

The entire shooting process of Letters to Juliet ended by the third week of November 2009, after which the production members returned to America.
