The basic premise of Mad Max revolves around the character of Max, a middle-aged Australian police officer posted in Melbourne. The story gets interesting when the lead actor makes it his top priority to catch and bring rowdy Australian bikers to law.

The production budget of Mad Max was less than half a million dollars, however, this famous action film grossed over $100 million in worldwide collections. The majority of the critics reviewed this action-adventure movie positively. George Miller and Byron Kennedy wrote the screenplay for this project. So while George was writing the screenplay, he already made up his mind with regard to the filming locations. As the story of Mad Max is set in Australia, George also wanted to shoot the majority of the outdoor scenes in and around this beautiful Oceanic country.

So, after George was done writing the screenplay for this project, he asked the assistant directors to commence the auditioning round. Mel Gibson was already selected to play the lead role in the movie, however, other supporting actors were auditioned for various other roles.

The auditioning process continued for several months, and during this time, George supervised the entire process. As a matter of fact, the director even asked the actors to attend special acting workshops to learn the mannerisms of native Australians.

The production members started looking for ideal filming locations in Australia in the second week of November 1977. Within a couple of weeks, the director and the filming crew were able to identify a number of suitable filming locations in and around Australia.

The principal photography of Mad Max in the first week of November 1977 and continued till the third week of December of the same year. The majority of the outdoor scenes of Mad Max were filmed in Victoria, Australia.

To be more specific, the production members captured the outdoor scenes of Mad Max in and around Melbourne and Seaford. While some pivotal scenes of the movie Laverton, Little River, and Sudbury.

The iconic car of the lead actor was specially designed by a German automobile engineer and was transported to Australia. Other logistic items and props were arranged by the production members before the shooting process.

The opening scene of the film, where we see the lead character inside his home, was shot in Lorne, Victoria. The production members used a medium-sized house located in the eastern part of Lorne and captured the scenes of Max’s home.

Other important scenes of Mad Max were filmed near Hume Highway, Craigieburn. The sequences of the wrecking yard were filmed inside Craigieburn Moto Wreckers’ garage. The scene where the lead actor catches one of the rowdy members of the biker gang was also filmed near the same location.

Additional outdoor scenes of Mad Max were captured in Spotswood, Clunes, and Geelong, Victoria. After all these scenes were shot, the production members moved to Parkville and captured the scenes of the police garage inside the University of Melbourne.

Scenes from the final quarter of the movie were filmed near New Gisborne, Victoria. The production members took special shooting permission before filming near Gisborne Train Station. 

After all these scenes were shot, the production members moved to Melbourne, Australia. The remaining interior scenes of Mad Max were then filmed inside a well-equipped studio located in the downtown area of Melbourne.

Before the end of the third week of December 1977, the shooting process of Mad Max ended.
