Where Was Weird Science Filmed? Let’s Know This Sci-Fi Film Closely!

John Hughes has made a number of iconic films and shows over the years. Movies like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Sixteen Candles, Uncle Buck, and not to mention National Lampoon’s Vacation were all directed by John.

But, while John was working on this project, he didn’t have a lot of experience. In other words, John still wasn’t sure about what the audience expected to see on the screen. So, without complicating the process too much, John decided to follow his heart and experiment with this movie.

Hughes didn’t only experiment with the script of this project, but he also selected a number of unique filming locations as well. The story of Weird Science is set in the iconic city of Chicago. However, Hughes thought of selecting several other filming locations for this comedy movie.

So, after the main filming locations in Highland Park were selected by John, the rest of the production members started looking for other filming locations. The crew was instructed to scout for potential shooting locations within Illinois.

Thus, within a couple of weeks, the production members were able to identify a number of ideal shooting spots in and around this mid-western state. After everything was done, Hughes checked the locations for the second time and then asked the crew to commence the filming process.

The principal photography started in the first week of October 1984 and continued until the third week of December of the same year. The majority of the pivotal scenes of this film were filmed in and around Highland Park.

However, the remaining scenes of Weird Science were captured in Chicago and Northbrook. Apart from the outdoor shots, the interior scenes of this comedy flick were shot in Illinois as well.

Let us now take a closer look at where was Weird Science filmed. Furthermore, I’ll also give you an overview of this movie.

The opening sequence of the movie, where we see the character of Wyatt for the first time, was filmed in Highland Park. The production members selected a medium-sized house located at 280 Cedar Avenue, Highland Park, to film the interior scenes of Wyatt’s house.

The sequences depicting Hilly and Gary’s houses were filmed in Highland Park as well. The house located at 1200 Linden Avenue was used to film Gary’s home, and it still exists.

However, the property located at 1445 Sheridan Road, Highland Park, which was used to capture the sequences of Hilly’s house, doesn’t exist now. The property was demolished a couple of years after the shooting was done.

Additional outdoor scenes in Highland Park were shot near Mulberry Place and Central Avenue. After the production members captured these scenes, they moved to the next filming location.

The second phase of filming began in Northbrook, Illinois. The iconic mall sequence of the movie was shot inside Northbrook Court Mall, located at 1515 Lake Cook Rd, Northbrook. Sequences from the final quarter of the movie were shot in and around the city of Chicago, after which the crew moved to California.

The remaining interior scenes of the movie were filmed inside Universal Studios, located at 100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City. For example, the interior scenes of Wyatt’s apartment were filmed on Stage 31 of Universal Studios.
