The American/Canadian series, Mystery 101, created for television, first aired in 2019. The central theme of the series revolves around the character of Amy Winslow, an English professor, who gets involved in solving a crime scene. The meek and docile life of the professor takes a sharp turn in the series, when she finds out about the mysterious killing of one of her students!

Mystery 101, is an ongoing series! The first episode of Season 1 aired in America and Canada on Hallmark channel and W network, respectively. The last episode of the pilot season aired in September 2021! The show was well received by audiences and critics alike, but the major problem stood with the release dates of the episodes.

Plot Of Mystery 101 | What’s It About

Mystery 101,  begins by introducing us to the female lead character of Amy Winslow (played by Jill Wagner) living with her widowed father, in the country-town of Garrison, Washington.

Amy is shown to be a professor of English, who specialises in crime and thriller fiction. She takes immense pleasure in teaching, and is very fond of her students. Suddenly she notices one of her students not attending any of her classes from the last couple of weeks, which she otherwise would. 

Later in the show, Amy meets with a renowned police detective, Travis Burke, after suspecting that her student might be in some sort of trouble. Amy almost forces herself into the crime scene, trying to help Travis solve the case. But her natural intuition of understanding the motif of a criminal, gets easily dismissed because of her overzealous efforts.

The story continues till film 4 or episode 4, and the show’s subplot emerges, with the introduction of new characters. Overall the storyline in the show remains cohesive, with the actors delivering their absolute best, with consistent performance on screen.

Where Was Mystery 101 Filmed? Let’s Know The Thriller Series More Closely!!

Even though Mystery 101 is set in Washington, the entire series was filmed in parts of Canada. Specifically in the happening city of Vancouver and small town of Squamish, in British Columbia.

Creators of the show, Robin Bernheim and Lee Goldberg, chose this location for two major reasons. Firstly, the beautiful location matched the backdrop which they wanted to portray in the series. Contrasting the scenic and delightful background with the grim and dreary plot. Secondly, the logistics required for shooting were easily available at the said location.

The principal photography began in the starting months of 2018, but had to be stopped in the middle, due to the Covid-19 restrictions. The show went on to suffer a huge loss, as it impacted the continuity of the episodes. Which ultimately resulted in loss of viewership.

Nonetheless, the shooting again resumed, after the restrictions were lifted, but the production team made sure that every protocol imposed by the government was being followed, during the course of filming. So without taking a moment longer, let’s now know more about the specific locations that were used for filming Mystery 101.

Vancouver | British Columbia

The bustling atmosphere of Vancouver was enough to entice the creators for filming the establishing scenes, at the heart of the city. The initial scenes where we are introduced to Amy, was filmed in a coffee shop in downtown Vancouver.

The shop was vacant, and the production team did a makeover of the site, to make it look like a coffee shop. Which later went on to become an important location in the series. Other scenes of downtown Vancouver featured in the sequences when officer Travis is shown to first arrive in the town of Garrison, Washington.

Majority of the filming took place in and around the busy parts of the city, thus managing the crowd was a big task for the production unit. But they soon maneuvered through the issue by filming during the early hours of the morning for scenes which portrayed daytime. And other night scenes were filmed only after midnight. The actors threw tantrums at first, but later came to realize the need of the hour!

Here’s a couple of great films and shows for you, such as, The Vampire Diaries, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Yellow Jacket, The Flash, The Good Doctor, Titanic, Prison Break and Once Upon a Time which were also filmed at the same location.

Squamish, British Columbia

The small town of Garrison that is shown in the series, is actually the Canadian town of Squamish in British Columbia. The creators along with the production unit decided to shoot at this location and use it as the backdrop for Amy’s family home.

Naturally one of the houses in the outskirts of the town was used to shoot the interior scenes of Amy’s fathers house. Yet for the outdoor scenes of the home the production unit stayed closer to the main town of Squamish as the transportation of logistics was easier there.

Few great sequences were filmed here till episode 4, after which the filming was at halted due to pandemic. Yet, the production team reportedly returned to the same location after the restrictions were loosened by the authorities.
