The critics started paying special attention to the works of Jared Hess, after the release of his first comedy film, Napoleon Dynamite in 2006. However, Jared on the other hand was least bothered about the media attention, as he was sharply focused on delivering super-exciting films for his audiences. Thus, in the initial stages of making Nacho Libre, Hess pitched an engaging story that he co-wrote, to a select few producers in Hollywood.

Soon, a renowned production company agreed to back this project and began looking for an ensemble cast. After the actors were selected, Jared scouted for idyllic filming locations in and around the beautiful country of Mexico. The decision to shoot on-location was made, to present the audience with stunning and authentic visuals of the places in which the story was set in.

Subsequently, the production members arrived at the final conclusion to shoot the majority of the outdoor scenes in Mexico, specifically in Oaxaca, and the remaining sequences in California. The principal photography began in the middle of September 2005 and was completed within two and a half months or so. Several other outdoor shots featured the indigenous people, specifically the Zapotecs and Mixtecs of the area. Also, an orphanage located on the outskirts of Oaxaca City was used to depict the orphan’s asylum shown in the film.

Other pivotal scenes were filmed at the historical site of Monte Albans. This pre-Columbian region, located in the Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan municipality area, was also used to capture the ending sequence of the movie, showcasing the monk taking the orphan kids on a field trip. Filming lasted for a month and a half in Mexico, after which the production member returned to America and captured the remaining scenes.

Los Angeles, California | USA

As soon as the majority of the outdoor sequences were captured in México, the filming crew headed straight back to California, to film the interior scenes. The sequences depicting the inner area of the Monastery and the wrestling matches were all shot in Universal Studios.
