The American sports comedy film, The Replacements, released in 2000 was inspired by true events, which took place in Washington Redskins’ NFL team. In this film, famous comedy film director Howard Deutch presents the story of an American football team and its replacement players. They are shown to initially win the rookie games without any rigorous training, and later qualify for Super Bowl XXII to everyone’s surprise.

The Replacements performed decently at the box office, grossing $50 million in worldwide collections. Where Was The Replacements Filmed? Let’s Know This Sports Comedy Film Closely!

The makers of The Replacements primarily wanted to shoot in the state of Washington. But after not finding ideal filming locations in the District of Columbia, the unit began scouting for shooting sites in other parts of America.

Soon, the states of Maryland and Virginia were finalized, and the principal photography commenced towards the beginning of August 1999. The production unit completed the entire filming process within two and a half months and did not encounter any events that delayed the filming schedule. Now, without any further ado, let’s discuss in-depth, where was The Replacements filmed, and learn more about the specific shooting sites.

Virginia | USA

The opening sequence of the film was shot in the capital city of Virginia. The production unit, after arriving in Richmond, used a vacant store, located in the business area of the city, to film the starting sequence. In fact, this is where the scene featuring the owner of Sentinels, invested in a conversation with McGintey was also filmed. After some exterior shots of the city, the crew then moved to the next location, to shoot the remaining sequences of The Replacements.

The majority of the filming took place in the state of Maryland, specifically in Baltimore. The FedEx Field, situated at 1600 FedEx Way, Landover was used to shoot the training sequences. The production unit extensively filmed in and around the stadium to portray the initial games. And the parking lot outside the stadium was used for filming as well, to depict the brawl scene with the former players.

But, the production unit thought of filming the Super Bowl match at a different stadium, thus they approached the administrative body of M&T Stadium. Soon, a contract was drafted after which, the filming crew was allowed to shoot inside M&T Bank Stadium, located at 1101 Russell St, Baltimore. Filming lasted for about a month or so, as the actors were pretty tired after going through rigorous training regimes, to stay in shape.

Ok guys, now let me quickly give you a brief overview of the film, so that you can get a grip on the basic storyline. Meanwhile, you can also check out Last Stand at Saber River, Yellowstone and Baddies West which I think you’d love to watch as well.

Where Was The Replacements Filmed? Keanu’s Inspiring Sports Comedy Flick!!

The Movie begins by introducing the character of Edward O’Neil, the sole owner of the Washington Sentinels. Edward is shown to desperately look for replacement players and coaches after the existing players decide to stop playing for the team.

Later in the film, Edward finds a bunch of rookie players, who played football previously, albeit never on a professional level. However, in order to teach the previous players a lesson, the owner decides to bring the untrained players on board, and later help them to get in shape. Soon after, McGinty, the coach of the team brings in Shane Falco, Eddie Martel and a bunch of other players.

Midway through the film, the coach initially asks Falco to be the captain of the team, and supervise the regular training routines. But the other players don’t approve of McGinty’s decision, and plot to sabotage the team. As the Sentinels approach to play the opening games, a rift between the player’s surfaces which McGinty quickly intervenes and confronts the players.

The Sentinels somehow keep winning matches, one after the other, despite facing huge protests from the former players. But things get serious when one of the former players tries to injure Falco outside an official match. The other players, after learning about the crisis, take Falco’s side to chase the former players away.

In the final quarter of the film, Falco and Martel finally bond after the incident, and inspire other members of the team to train with vigor for the upcoming SuperBowl game. Now, to know what happens next, whether the Sentinels go on to win the Super Bowl finals or not, I’d implore you to watch the film. As I don’t think you’d be happy to get all the spoilers here.

  1. As someone who lives in Baltimore City- the parking lot scenes and the exterior shots throughout the training and regular season are clearly filmed at M&T, not Fed Ex.
