The entire shooting of Outer Range was done in different places in New Mexico and California. But the production members didn’t select these filming locations during the initial stage of shooting.
The creative team wanted to shoot all major outdoor sequences of the show in and around Mexico. But, as the production members couldn’t arrange the required international shooting permission in time, the makers decided to film Outer Range in New Mexico.
Important to mention that, the majority of the outdoor sequences were captured around the arid city of Albuquerque. While a handful of pivotal sequences were filmed in Los Angeles. The principal photography commenced in the second week of January 2021 and continued till the month of June of the same year.
The onset of Covid-19 completely disrupted the shooting schedule and made the production members wait till the travel bans were lifted by the government. But, thankfully as soon as the filming crew got the approval, they worked hard to finish filming as quickly as possible.
As per reports, there were no other major incidents that took place on set, during the course of the shooting. Once the second phase of shooting commenced, everything went on smoothly.

Special lighting equipment had to be used to film the sequences, where we see Royal making a startling discovery at night while inspecting his farm. Some other important sequences depicting the family home of Abbott were also filmed in Albuquerque.
The production members then moved to Las Vegas and captured the remaining outdoor sequences of the show.
Los Angeles, California
The sequences depicting an alternative and futuristic world in the show were filmed with the help of CGI and VFX. The production members moved to Los Angeles and used a well-equipped studio to capture the interior sequences. Filming continued till the second week of June 2021, after which the production members wrapped the entire shooting process.
