Practical Magic recounts the story of Sally played by Sandra Bullock and Gillian played by Nicole Kidman. Sally and Gillian are born into a magical family, but never really tried their hands on witchcraft. Things turn upside down when Gillian’s lover, Jimmy Angelov played by Goran Visnjic mysteriously dies.
Following his death, both the sisters decide to learn witchcraft. In order to bring back Jimmy from the dead, both the sisters inject his dead body with an evil and cruel spirit that tries to put an end to their family line.

Well, as we mentioned, a major portion of the movie was filmed in the town of Coupeville on Whidbey Island, Washington. For example, the scene where you witness the farmer’s market that was shot in downtown Coupeville and interestingly it was stocked with actual produce from local farmers and a lot of seafood that was provided by Penn Cove Shellfish.
If you’ve noticed, Practical Magic showcases some iconic shops in the town of Coupeville, that capture the essence of the historic and famous seaport which still continues to draw tourists from different parts of the country. It is to be believed that the director and the production were highly impressed by the town’s look, as in the buildings, streets, and so on.
However, the town has an estimated population of 1,831 but tourists from nearby towns and cities visit Coupeville from time to time. Coupeville was founded by a captain named Thomas Coupe in the 1850s.
The town was officially incorporated on 20th April 1910. The town is known to be a historic district, within the federal Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve. It was established by Congress in 1978 and is known to be the one and only National Historical Reserve in the entire United States of America.
The town has a number of farmlands, shorelines and beaches, numerous victorian style buildings and a couple of public recreation areas like Fort Ebey State Park and Fort Casey State Park. A number of scenes were shot in California in a set. But eventually, the set that was created in California was brought down to Coupeville and was placed inside the house that we witness in the film. The interior work of the set took about a year to finish. It was specially designed for the filming of certain scenes and was later torn down.
Interestingly, after the filming of Practical Magic, it was reported that Sandra Bullock during the shooting of the drunk scenes, along with Nicole Kidman was actually drunk on a not-so-good tequila that was brought by Kidman, herself. Later, the production unit stated that they felt a supernatural presence in the house while filming those scenes.
Both the cast and crew later claimed that they heard noises that were not normal and usual, especially while shooting the coven scene at the end of the movie. Apart from these spooky things, the director had an interesting and unique idea of including the entire population of the town in the final scene, where we see numerous people at the Owens home. So, now you know those people were actually the residents of the town and not hired extras.
