The story of this film is set in America, however, the filming of Royally Ever After took place entirely in Ireland. During the initial days of pre-production, Lee wanted to shoot his film in America. He even asked the production members to scout for various filming locations in and around the state of Michigan.
But, after the director wasn’t satisfied with the overall setting of the scouted locations, he decided to consult with other creative heads of the unit. The makers soon arranged a meeting and eventually decided to shoot Royally Ever After in the U.K.
The production members were sent again, to scout for shooting locations in Scotland and Ireland. After reviewing the potential shooting sites for the second time, Lee arrived at the final conclusion, to film Royally Ever After in Ireland.
Important to mention that, the majority of the filming took place in and around the city of Dublin. Some pivotal sequences of the movie were captured in Killarney. The principal photography began in the first week of February 2018 and continued till the end of March, of the same year.
Luckily, the filming schedule remained unchanged, as the required logistics and equipment were arranged well in advance. The filming crew worked diligently as well and stayed on top of the shooting dates.

The opening sequence of the movie, where we see the lead characters of Sara and Daniel for the first time, was actually filmed in Dublin. A medium-sized house located near the famous Ha’penny Bridge was used to capture the interior sequences of Sara’s home.
Special permission had to be taken from the owner of the property, before turning around the interior decor of the house. Minor changes were made to the exterior part of the house as well, before capturing the outdoor shots of Sara’s home and the neighborhood.
Other pivotal sequences in Dublin were captured near Phoenix Park. The production members took permission from the authorities of an actual school, before filming the classroom scenes. Special lighting equipment had to be used while filming the sequences depicting Sara’s elementary classes.
Filming in Dublin lasted for 2 and a half weeks, after which the production members moved to the next filming location in Ireland.
Killarney, Ireland | UK
After the majority of the sequences were captured, the production members moved to the Irish town of Killarney. The scenes depicting the landscape of the fictional country of St Ives were captured in and around this beautiful town.
The production members filmed some breathtaking outdoor shots near Killarney National Park. The lush green background of the National Park was perfect to recreate the landscape of St Ives.
The historic Ross Castle, built in the 15th Century, was used to capture the sequences of the castle of St. Ives shown in the movie. A huge chunk of the production budget was spent on filming the sequences in this castle.
Filming in Killarney continued till the end of March 2018. The production members then returned to America and began working on the promotion of the film.
