After Don Winslow joined this project as the chief screenwriter, he suggests Oliver film the entire movie in Mexico. However, the director had other plans. Oliver arranged a special meeting with other heads of the unit and also took their advice.
Soon after, the director asked the production members to scout for various filming locations in and around the state of California. Later, Oliver also decides to shoot a few sequences in Indonesia as well.

A few additional outdoor sequences of the film were captured near Malibu and Rancho Palos Verdes, after which the production members traveled overseas.

In order to film the final sequence of the movie, the production members traveled to South-East Asia. But before the shooting could commence in Indonesia, the crew ran into a major problem at the airport. The altercation with the authorities significantly hindered the shooting schedule.
However, after the director sought assistance from the American government, the standing issue was quickly resolved. Thankfully, filming in Indonesia commenced after the confusion was cleared.
The final outdoor sequence of the movie, where Chon is forced to kill his partner, was captured near the beautiful Moyo Island. Filming in Indonesia continued for two more weeks, the crew then returned to America.
