Celebrated director, Sam Mendes was brought on board, to present the character of the sought-after British spy, in his own unique way. The basic premise of Skyfall entails the journey of Bond, from the depths of a precarious situation, which compromised the secrecy of MI6, to re-establishing the former glory of the organization.

Skyfall went on to gross over $1.9 billion in worldwide collections, against a mediocre filming budget, which speaks leaps and bounds about the popularity of this film amongst fans. The critics too highly praised this intense-action movie, which propelled Skyfall to earn 67 prestigious awards, including 2 Oscars.

So, before I give you an overview of this blockbuster film, let’s find out where was Skyfall filmed. So that you can take a closer look at the gorgeous filming locations.

Where Was Skyfall Filmed? Let’s Know This Action Movie Closely!

Sam Mendes has always been praised by critics and audiences across the world, for bringing ingenuity to the table. Films like Road to Perdition, Jarhead and Revolutionary Road are some of the best works of Mendes, which went on to become a roaring success at the box office. Not just commercially though, Sam has always believed in experimenting with different locations and camera techniques, to give his audience the best possible experience of a perfect cinema.

Thus keeping on with the tradition to explore exotic locations, Sam asked the production unit to look for the best potential filming locations across South-eastern Europe. Soon the beautiful country of Turkey was finalized for shooting the final sequence of the film. The majority of the filming, however, took place in and around England. The principal photography began in the first week of November 2011 and was completed by the end of May 2012.

The extended filming schedule is owed to the fact that the production members failed to stay on top of the filming dates, for a number of reasons, that we would further discuss. So without waiting any longer let’s explore where was Skyfall filmed, and find out more about the specific shooting sites.

The opening scene of the film, depicting the ancestral Scottish home of the lead character, was actually filmed in the small village of Elstead. However, this hamlet being located near the non-metropolitan county of Surrey was easily accessible. Which immensely helped the production members to transport the logistics required to construct the make-believe home of Bond with high-graded plywood and plaster from the scratch. Filming lasted for a couple weeks in Elstead then the crew moved to Oxfordshire and captured the interior scenes of Bond’s basement office.

The majority of the sequences were filmed in London. Scenes such as the MI6 training grounds and the entrance of the new MI6 headquarters were all filmed in the metropolitan borough of Holborn, which closely resembles the look of Midtown Manhattan. Other pivotal sequences featured the iconic National Gallery located at Trafalgar Square and Great Suffolk Street. A few minor outdoor shots were also taken on Vauxhall Bridge, after which the production members prepared to travel overseas to Turkey.

Istanbul, Adana | Turkey

After reaching the beautiful country of Turkey, the production members waited at the airport for the delivery of logistics. But to their amazement half of the shooting equipment went missing, which caused the filming of the sequences in Istanbul to get delayed. Upon further enquiry, the production somehow tracked the missing logistic items and requested to get them delivered at the earliest near the shooting location. So after maneuvering through the major mismanagement the production members started capturing the outdoor shots in the historic city of Istanbul.

Pivotal sequences in this beautiful city featured the famous Hagia Sophia Mansions. Special filming permission was taken from the Turkish government, before shooting inside this beautiful place. However, the production members later traveled to the southern part of Turkey, to capture the ending sequence of the film. After reaching the city of Adana, the filming crew extensively captured the outdoor shots of the final scene on the banks of the Seyhan river.

So, if you’re in the mood to spend your holidays in Turkey, then you can look up Cappadocia, Antalya, Bodrum, Pamukkale, İzmir and Ankara which are often visited by tourists during the winter.

Alright guys, now let’s briefly discuss the plot of Skyfall, so that you can get a better understanding of the basic premise of the film. Meanwhile, you can also check out Broadway Rising, The Crown and Medieval which I think you’d enjoy watching over the weekend.
