The basic premise of this rousing movie revolves around Jack Traven, a middle-aged American police officer living in Los Angeles. The plot thickens when Jack is tasked to defuse a live bomb planted by a sharp criminal.

Where Was Speed Filmed? Let’s Know This Action Thriller Movie Closely!

The story of Speed is in the city of Los Angeles. In fact, the majority of the outdoor scenes of this movie were also captured in the same city. However, a number of other pivotal sequences of this special movie were filmed in different locations in California.

During the first phase of production, the director instructed Keanu Reeves to take martial arts classes, as a number of sequences involved fighting scenes. Other actors were also asked for special physical training classes to perform specific stunts that the director had planned.

But unfortunately, while the actors were taking training from a martial arts instructor, a major incident happened. This eventually affected the entire shooting schedule as the actor injured himself during the training and had to undergo several weeks of treatment.

After this situation was over, the director finally shifted his attention to the filming locations. Jan de Bont asked the production members to look for ideal shooting locations in and around the beautiful cities located on the West Coast.

A couple of weeks later, the production members came up with locations according to the instructions of the director. Bont checked the main filming locations in person and then asked the crew to look for more shooting sites.

Eventually, after all the locations were scouted by the team, the director decided to shoot the majority of the outdoor scenes in and around the city of Los Angeles. The principal photography of Speed began in the first week of September 1993 and continued till the fourth week of December of the same year.

As I mentioned before, the first phase of shooting was done in the city of Los Angeles. However, some pivotal scenes of Speed were also captured in Venice and Century City. The entire shooting process lasted for 3 months or so.

The opening sequence of the film, where we see the lead character for the first time, was shot in the downtown area in Los Angeles. The production members used a vacant building to capture the interior scenes of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The production members turned around the entire building to make it look like a police station. Other important sequences were filmed near North Alameda St and Santa Monica. The sequence where we see the antagonist planting the bomb inside the building was also shot in the same location.

Additional outdoor scenes were filmed near Main St & Ocean Park Boulevard. The sequence of the lobby was filmed inside Fox Plaza, located at 2121 Avenue, Century City, Los Angeles. After all these shots were captured, the production members also filmed inside Los Angeles City Hall, located at 200 North Spring Street, Downtown Los Angeles.

The final part of the movie was shot near Grauman’s Chinese Theater located at 6925 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles. After all these shots were captured, the production members filmed the interior scenes inside 20th Century Fox Studios, located at 10201 Pico Blvd, Century City.
