Greg Basser came up with the original idea for this series. During the initial stages of production, the makers intended to shoot this reality show in and around Texas. However, due to a major issue, the makers had to change the entire setup and come up with a new idea. Later, the creative heads suggested filming the entire show in Australia. As the main motive of the show is to recreate the harsh and reddish-looking backdrop of Mars, the makers thought it would be best to shoot the outdoor scenes in and around the Outback region in Australia.
The principal photography of Stars on Mars began in the first week of May 2023. The majority of the shooting was done in and around South Australia.
