HBO’s action-adventure series, The Last of Us is primarily inspired by the AAA title game Last of Us released in 2013. The action-drama series is all set to release on HBO max, in the first month of 2023. The massive popularity of the story-driven game inspired Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann to make an engaging show, depicting a post-apocalyptic world.

The basic premise of The Last of Us portrays the survival story of Joel and Ellie. These two estranged individuals join forces to maneuver through the challenges of a post-pandemic world after the majority of the population is wiped out. Season 1 of The Last of Us was entirely filmed in Canada, except for one episode, which was filmed on location, in Kansas City. The principal photography took place in the province of Alberta, specifically in and around the city of Calgary, for the most part. Whereas, a few minor sequences were filmed in other parts of Alberta.

The makers, however, didn’t arrive at this conclusion instantaneously, as during the initial stages of pre-production the creators disagreed on more than one occasion. After the cast members were selected, and the storyline was re-edited, the production members began scouting for ideal filming locations across the east coast of America.

However, after Craig was dissatisfied with the overall setting of the shortlisted locations, he asked the members to look for other locations on the west coast. Surprisingly, the shooting locations scouted in and around California didn’t make the cut either.

So, finally, after several meetings with other members of the production, Craig and Neil arrived at the mutual conclusion, to shoot the entire series in Canada. Principal photography commenced in July 2021 and was completed within two months. The filming schedule was delayed for two weeks, as the Canadian government instructed the production members to be quarantined for 14 days.
