Trish Sie had previously made a number of award-winning comedy films like Pitch Perfect 3, Being Dennis, and Sitting in Bar with Cakes. This tells us that Sie is anything but a novice when it comes to making blockbuster comedy films.
So, when the producers of The Sleepover approached Sie for this project, she readily agreed to join and also convinced Sarah Rothschild to join as a screenplay writer. After Trish supervised the auditioning process, she and other members of her team started scouting perfect filming locations in America.
Since the production budget was big enough to sustain shooting in expensive locations, the director asked the crew to look for ideal filming locations in and around the city of Boston. In fact, after the first few shooting locations were decided by the crew, they looked for some more potential sites in and around the state of Massachusetts.
Finally, the director decided to shoot the majority of the outdoor scenes in Boston and the remaining scenes in several locations in Massachusetts. The principal photography started in the second week of November 2019 and continued for one and a half months.
Luckily, the entire shooting process was over before the onset of Covid-19, Had the production members finished the filming process any late, this project would’ve been delayed indefinitely. But, even though the principal photography wasn’t impacted by the pandemic, the release date of The Sleepover sure was.
The maker of The Sleepover originally intended to release this film digitally by the second week of March. However, the release date had to be changed due to the pandemic, and the movie was eventually released on Netflix in the first week of August 2020.

The sequences depicting Clancy and Kevin’s home were filmed at different locations. The production members traveled to the outskirts of Boston to capture the scenes of Clancy’s home. The interior scenes of Clancy and Kevin’s home were filmed inside this small house.
Other important scenes in Massachusetts were filmed in the city of Hanover. The sequences in The Sleepover depicting Clancy’s school were shot inside Hanover High School. This public school is located at 287 Cedar St, Hanover, Massachusetts.
The production members didn’t face any problems while shooting in this location since they took the shooting permit from the school authorities well in advance. Added to the fact that the school was closed for winter vacation.
This made the filming process even less stressful for the crew, as they were able to shoot freely without infringing the privacy of the actual students of Hanover High School.

The basic premise of The Sleepover revolves around two young American kids who make a shocking discovery about their mother’s past life. At the very beginning of the film, the character of Nancy, along with her sibling, gets invited to Travis’ home for a house party.
