This is 40 follows the lives of a couple – Pete and Debbie. Now officially in middle age, the two have a strange encounter with reality. They have to deal with money problems, family problems, and worse of all, problems with their children. 

Pete is overbearing on his father and lends him way too much money, which is causing the family financial difficulties. Debbie owns a parlor but that’s not working too well for her either. Her employee is stealing from her and things just don’t make sense.

To top it all off, on Pete’s 40th birthday, Debbie finds out she is pregnant. Which she decides to keep from Pete for a while. Later on, when Pete finds out about the news that his wife is hiding from him, he feels betrayed and runs away in disgust.

With Apatow producing so many successful comedies, This is 40 is a bit underwhelming, to be honest. It’s not bad, but it’s not something super unique either. Brentwood, California, USA

This is 40 is the most notable for the house that Debbie and Pete own. The filming of the movie for the house scenes was done entirely in Brentwood California. Now, you need to know that the house is private property, so your chances of getting to go inside are quite slim.

But hey, you can always check it out from the outside, right? Director Judd Apatow got the house from the producer of the movie Bryan Zuriff. So maybe if you know a guy, who knows a guy who knows Bryan, maybe you can check it out.

For the movie, the house wasn’t touched. The way we see it in the movie is how the house is in real life. Especially the classy yet minimal interiors of the house. Set designers chose not to modify it to preserve its authenticity. Besides a few tweaks here and there and adding some accessories to the kitchen, the house was as Bryan and his wife have maintained it.

One of the most important characters in This Is 40 are the kids. Pete and Debbie find it hard to juggle their life around their children. Though they leave no stone unturned to always be there for them, there is always something that they miss out on.

Their kids, Charlotte and Sadie go to the local school. The school that has been used in the movie is the real-life Canyon Elementary School, located in Brentwood, California. There are a few key scenes filmed in the school.

One of which is when one of the kids has an argument with Charlotte and they get into a fight. The next day Pete and Debbie are made to come to the school and meet the principal. There we see Charlotte use a lot of expletives and storm out of the room. Quite hilarious if you ask us, but in reality, a very look for the parents.

Lastly, the outdoor shots where the couple is out and about have been filmed in and around Mar Vista, Los Angeles. The location is quite a popular spot among directors as their choice for outdoor spots. Mar Vista is locally popular for movies like Starsky and Hutch and Point Break. Both are cult classics that are highly revered by fans.
