So, during the initial stages of pre-production, a special scouting team was given the responsibility to locate idyllic filming locations in different parts of the world. The makers had the liberty to experiment with an alternative style of shooting, as the filming budget was considerably high ($200 million).

So after researching the locations thoroughly, Cameron conferred with other members of the unit and decided to shoot the sequences of Titanic in different parts of Mexico, California and Canada. Important to mention, that the majority of the sequences were recreated inside a studio in Mexico, while a pivotal sequence was also actually on the Atlantic Ocean. But apart from that, no other scenes were filmed anywhere near the Atlantic Ocean, as most of them were recreated inside a studio in Mexico. The Fox Baja Studios, located in the region of Baja California Norte was extensively used by the production members to depict the breathtaking scenes of Titanic. A life-sized model of the actual ship was constructed by the members of the crew to make the sequences visually appealing. The crew took nearly two months to model the ship and later took another two weeks to paint and re-touch the exterior parts of the colossal make-believe Titanic.

Cameron spent a huge chunk of the budget just on constructing the dummy model of Titanic and adding CGI effects, but retrospectively, nearly all the scenes came out just perfect. So, apart from the sequences depicting the journey of Jack and Rose on board, the other scenes were recreated in parts of California. To showcase the climax sequence of the engine room, the production members actually filmed inside the boiler room of a ship. The S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien, anchored at the port of San Francisco, was used to capture the interior sequences. Other pivotal scenes were shot in Henry Ripening & Distribution Centre situated at 578 Enterprise Street, after which the production crew moved to Canada.

The production members arrived in Halifax, to capture the final sequence of the movie. Cameron filmed a number of pivotal scenes in this Atlantic port city. A number of exterior shots of the local maritime museum were also taken to pay respect in the credit-scene to the actual passengers, who drowned in 1912. After the filming was completed in Canada, the production members returned to California and captured some more sequences near Long Beach. The entire shooting was wrapped by the end of March 1997.
